I bought this 2.5mm (male) to 3.5mm (female) stereo adapter and tried it out with my Apple iPod earphones that has a 3.5mm jack and plugged all that into my iPhone4 clone which has a 2.5mm jack input. Unfortunately, there was sound coming out for only the left ear. Not good. I was expecting that although I was hoping that would not be the case. However, fortunately, I also already have a 3.5mm stereo (female) to 3.5mm mono (male) adapter (which is similar to this one) with the one ring on the male jack. I plug the adapters together and I get sound out of both ears on the earphones. Good, but this meant using double adapters which could be cumbersome.
As an alternative to these double adapters, I found that I already had a single 2.5mm mono (male) to 3.5mm stereo (female) adapter single jack that I could use to get sound in both ears although it's mono and the adapter jack sits high sticking out of the phone. Cumbersome also and only mono but that alternative is a single adapter that works.
One problem you may have is that these adapters will not take into account the microphone on your phone. This is just for audio. If you only want music and don't plan to do calls, then this will work. But if you plan to do calls, your phone may have problems doing calls with these adapters plugged into the phone. I found my phone to be repeatedly saying the earphones were plugged in/out over and over when trying to make a call. Not good for calls. Great for music even if mono in my setup.
