Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 885/885T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Speech RecognitionCustomer Review: Garmin Nuvi 885T - A Winner !! Summary: 5 Stars
** I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 885T back in Oct 09, so I have had a couple months to learn most of the system functions of this unit. Eyed many of the user reviews cautioning system freeze-ups, etc., but went ahead and bought this model anyway. I primarily wanted to have the voice-recognition capability for use when driving in heavy traffic areas for hands-free control of the unit. I wasn't disappointed. So far, my receiver has worked as advertised in this capacity.
** The voice recognition command functions works very well, under the right conditions, and after you are familiar of the different screens and screen command functions. It does have a sensitive microphone, although with its placement on the back of the unit, you sometimes have to repeat a command using a louder voice at times. When using voice recognition, turn your radio off, the AC/heater fan blower down, minimizing as many background noises as possible, and it will easily recognize your voice commands when conditions are right. You merely call out the function name as it is listed on the screen, and it will open that particular function. The system then has to repeat the function name that you just pronounced, before you can proceed with the next voice command. This time delay can be annoying until you remember to wait for it to finish. The map zoom function by voice command took me awhile to figure out (not detailed in the manual). The "+" and "-" symbols on the map screen can be changed by voice by saying, "plus", or "minus", not "zoom in" or "zoom out". Voice commands worked great when driving on the 405 in Los Angeles heavy freeway traffic. Didn't have to take my hands off the steering wheel using the voice functions.
** The map data that came installed on the unit is accurate for the most part, but not entirely. Be careful driving in Lancaster, CA. When selecting a location to drive to, many business locations addresses direct you to the wrong location, in some cases several blocks (almost a mile) away. (Ex: try finding the Comfort Suites & Lowe's). A map database update might fix this, but haven't had the time to try this function.
** If you purchase this unit for utilizing the optional MSN Direct service, you will only have a short time to utilize it. Microsoft recently announced it was terminating this service in early 2012. Hopefully, Garmin can switch to another similar service before this happens. I haven't tested all the services, but the movies theater function is cool. You can select from a list of nearby theaters, & get a listing of the current movies that are playing, & directions on how to get there. It would have been nice if they included the show times of each movie. You can drive to the theater, but have to check the times once you get there. This and the other basic MSN Direct functions are neat, but could stand upgrades to make them more useful. The traffic flow information appears to work, but does seem to need extra time to provide more current updates. Although, when you listen to the traffic reports on the radio, the time delay on their reports are similar.
** The most annoying feature to me on this unit is the power switch, located on the top, upper-left edge of the unit. It is a recessed slide switch, which is fine for preventing accidentally bumping it. However, when you do want to use the switch, it is very difficult to operate, because it "is" a recessed slide switch. A recessed pushbutton switch would be more user-friendly.
** The unit has a 4-in wide screen which is excellent for viewing maps horizontally. It would be nice if the unit could be switched to operate the map screen vertically as well. When driving, nearby streets tend to scroll off the screen quicker horizontally, making it harder to catch the cross-street names as you approach them. On a vertical screen, you would have a few extra seconds to be able to do this.
** It's amusing listening to the unit attempting to pronounce street names, especially when it tries to pronounce many of the Spanish ones. I'm sure most GPS receivers set to English pronunciations do the same thimg, but it is still amusing listening to it try to say "Fort Huachuca", or "La Tiejra Blvd".
** Haven't tried customer service as I have had no problems with this GPS receiver so far. Ir did freeze up one time about a week after I first used it. Had to remove the battery to restart it. It has worked flawlessly ever since.
** Overall, the Garmin Nuvi 885T is a great GPS receiver. It's learning curve user-friendly on GPS operations and voice command usage. Happy I bought it. Would recommend it to a friend.
