Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic

Customer Review: Some humble thoughts
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this unit because I am new to the area. It is impossible (in my opinion) to tell "WHICH IS THE BEST GPS EVER" because there are die-hard fans of each brand regardless, so when you buy one that isn't your brand, you can't really have an open mind and be totally unbiased. What I am saying is that you need to know beforehand what you want in the GPS and be satisfied with what you buy. I am satisfied that I got what I paid for, though there are a few things I haven't been able to take advantage of - at least yet. The research that I did led me to this brand and this product in particular. Here are my thoughts so far (having only had it for a half a week, and maybe I'll update on other features later).

Positives: It is EXTREMELY easy to use. My wife isn't a techie, and she can just as easily navigate as I can. This is probably the most important feature in any GPS, (in my opinion). The reason is, when you want to get somewhere, you want it to be easy to find, easy to see when you're navigating, and overall if you need to change it while on the road (which you should NEVER do while driving, admittedly), you don't want a lot of confusion and button pushing to fix the navigation. Everyone I researched on said that the Garmin's biggest positive against most other brands is the ease of use- they weren't lying. I also turned up the detail to "High" settings and the picture is really nice. It doesn't add a lot of details to the actual map, but you do notice a bit of difference in clarity.

Features: I can't give a decent opinion on price. Generally, I like to go with the middle of the road type products because what I have noticed on a lot of high end GPS's is that they brag on features that come standard on lower end units, with only slight (if any) variation. Well, duh! Save a buck then and swallow your pride. Intelligent people shouldn't fall for that, especially in our economic situation! The MSN service is ending in 2012, so beware of paying for something that will be discontinued.
[...] This comes on the 780, but traffic updates I believe come through MSN(?) The 765t is lifetime traffic with the cord you need. Again, everything is ready to use RIGHT out of the box.
A big factor in my waiting to purchase any GPS was price. I paid 260 for this unit only because of gift money. If I had a very small budget, I would have gone with a 2xx series instead of the 765t. Consumer Reports ranked them high. Heads up if that's you. I appreciate (on the 765) the posted speed limit (which I guess would be a negative if I was speeding and a cop pulled me over and pointed out that my GPS tells me what the speed limit that I was breaking was), the lifetime free traffic (which if you add on to your GPS is like 129 dollars), The big buttons on the main screen (Easy to see and use), the POI (point of interest) menu is easy to navigate and has a ton of information on places near you. I like the fact that from POI menu you can type in a location you want to find without having an exact address, like you would need if you tried to navigate from the "Where to" menu on the main screen. I like the "Favorites" screen. It is neat to be able to set a favorite and make it easy to navigate to something saved to the GPS. While not a "favorite" by definition, putting a work address in there or traveling home to see family are both advantages that you can save in there before traveling to save time. I have good satellite reception, something that a lot of reviews said really stunk on Garmin devices. I know two other Garmin units in my family (no, I didn't select Garmin for that reason) and they have never had a problem, either. Both units were far less expensive than mine as well. The clip mount for the windshield is EASY and awesome. The unit plugs in with ease and comes off with ease by a button release under the mount. The traffic/charger is neat, too.

Negatives: I didn't check the bluetooth compatibility with phones before purchasing, and unfortunately mine isn't compatible. But my phone, unfortunately, isn't an old one- so that REALLY stinks. My wife's bluetooth headset isn't working well, so I kept telling her to wait until the GPS came... Big bummer there. I don't know if that can be an update released by Garmin, but that would be nice if you could. Another negative (and I think this one is basically preference) is that when you re-route because of traffic, you have to confirm the route change (because the GPS is set for minimal distance or time, or whatever from point "a"-"b". I understand that you would maybe want the GPS to confirm (kind of like a confirmation on your computer to delete a file) but why would I go into the re-routing traffic screen if it weren't to avoid the traffic up ahead? Considering I am doing the change while driving, I would want it as simple and easy as possible. The static on the FM transmitter (that allows you to hear navigation through your speakers) was annoying to me. It wasn't really bad, but it was enough to mention. Other than that, it is a nice feature to have because it makes navigation louder. One thing I don't know is whether or not you can listen to music while navigating through the speakers. If not (and I am guessing it is not possible) that would really stink, too. Also, the touch screen doesn't respond really good. I have big fingers, which is my problem, but the buttons on the keyboard are small and its easy to make mistakes in spelling because of it. I have waited on getting an ITOUCH or IPHONE for (price) and also for the touch screen technology to get better. Sometimes I hit the down arrow for more options on the main screens and it selects something I didn't press. That's annoying, too. I have found it is much more accurate if you use nails, but then I would think you run the risk of scratching the unit. To get to the calibration menu, you have to turn off/on the unit while singing a song and doing a jig. It would be much better if it was one simple button in one of the menus. Additionally, calibrating the unit didn't help with my problems. I think I need some new fingers.

Don't Know about yet Features:
I tried to plug in my IPOD through the GPS and it hasn't worked. I don't even know if it can, but I tried and it was unsuccessful. The MP3 player is neat, works pretty well, too. I don't know how many songs you could put on it at one time, but whatever. The SD card slot makes it easy to transfer pictures and music to the GPS.
The lane assistant hasn't come up at all yet, nor have all the arrows that the pictures advertising the unit come up. I haven't seen any 3-D buildings come up, either. I live close to Philadelphia and Camden- areas that I would assume that the lane assistant could be helpful to have. The lane assistant is one of the biggest reasons why I got this unit. The 780 was 50 bucks cheaper, but it was discontinued when I ordered it and I didn't want to deal with the headache. Plus, this lane assistant was new technology and I thought it would make navigation that much easier for my wife as well. I also understand, however, that it isn't designed for EVERY highway experience, but rather some of the more confusing ones. I am anxious to see it, though.
I don't know how easy it is to add a picture to your destination- I will probably do that soon. I like the idea of having pictures for POIs on or close to your driving route. If you're out on a Sunday drive and you see one, then you might be persuaded to check them out. That's neat, in my opinion.

*Additional update 1: I downloaded all the free updates that come on the unit, haven't noticed anything fabulous as a result. I also added pictures from other GPS users who marked out certain locations. I don't know, but it seems after putting those items on it really slows down the unit. Maybe its the pictures because they are the last to appear on screen. I was hoping that the pictures would show up on the map, but it appears that they are simply marked with a camera icon. Now I regret doing it, but I am not sure how to get those pictures off. Annoying.
