I had owned Magellan then Tom-tom. Last week I bought a Garmin Nuvi 650 and WOW this is really the top of the line among GPS.
Let me compare the 3:
Magellan--When you lost your way or missed a turn, this GPS is very slow to calculate.
Tomtom 3rd Edition--One of the best. It reminds you when a POIs is approaching like gas stations, etc. Very fast to recalculate when you missed a turn. User friendly. The only thing I dont like is it doesnt mentioned the street name and takes longer to recieve satelite signal. Though every turns is voice guided, it only activates when you are about to turn.
Garmin Nuvi 650--Speaks the street name and freeway entrance and exit. Very easy to use. Voice guided turns speaks ahead 300 meters away.

I got my nuvi two days ago and updated it with the latest map and device updates. Its really an awesome gps, its fast ,accurate and easy to use. The best feature it has is auto on/off mode. When you start your car it starts it self and when you stop your car it turns it self off. By the way it can connect to WAAS satellite, the other navigation devices cant do that so consider this option before you buy another gps. I also have a navigon 7100 but I strongly recommend nuvi 650 to who needs a good and cheap portable gps.

After 2 years and over 45 thousand miles my unit died recently, It was the best GPS I have ever had, and I'll sure miss it, eventhough I have another garmin gps now, nothing can beat this gps in my opinion.

This Nuvi 650 is no longer made by Garmin, having been replaced with the Nuvi 750. But it has all the features I needed plus a few I didn't expect. The larger screen size is nice for my aging eyes. Other reviews failed to mention that this unit has modes for driving, walking or cycling. This affects what routes the device chooses. About the only negative aspect of this unit is the flip up antenna. Newer versions have an internal antenna. But if you are going to mount this on the vehicle, it makes no difference. If you plan to store it in your purse or pocket, then you have to flip up the antenna to use it. I bought this model because I was impressed with the Nuvi 200 that my friend had. Excellent product.Snags sat fast. 3D with color is very easy to read 'on the fly'. Spoken directions in perfect time to execute turns/etc. Very fast at recalculation. Very complete, plug and go. Comes with charger/pwr cord, computer cord, and bracket/mount. Amazing amount of tech in small pkg. The Nuvi 650 is 4.3 wide...best option...much more screen space. Lots of 'BANG for the buck' @ $249.95 (on sale from $799 or so). User friendly and very easy to get comfortable with. Plug in and drive around for an hour trying to outfox it.....hehe....won't happen. Best value for price item I have bought for years. Much easier to use than conventional GPS. This is my first GPS, although I've used some that belonged to friends and family. This is a great unit - easily 5 stars. The 4.3" screen is very clear and instructions are given in a very timely manner. It always picks up a signal very quickly after start-up. So far it has been accurate on trips throughout Virginia and North Carolina. However, my two suggested areas of improvement are: (1) No capability to enter zip codes to find a location and (2) a carrying case should be included. Otherwise, I like this unit very much. It is a winner and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality portable GPS. Prices do vary widely, so shop around. I decided to go with Amazon.com - and experienced no problems whatsoever.
