Customer Review: Garmin Nuvi 370
Summary: 5 Stars

Garmin's Nuvi 370 has it all... I purchased this as a gift for my daughter who is off to college soon and I was so impressed with it's performance ( I had to try it out of course!!! ) that I purchased one for myself. Not only are maps of North America included in the 370's memory, but most of Europe as well. As the son of a long distance trucker, I grew up with road maps (a new road atlas was always the perfect gift to get) and having travelled many, many, many miles over the highway on my own with a good road map, locating a nearby store, restaurant or a hospital in an emergency when in a new area is something the Garmin does that a roadmap cannot offer. The Garmin's ability to recalculate a route to offer an alternative route is also a very good option when there is a roadblock ahead. While there are larger screens available on other GPS units, the 370's screen size is just right. Who needs more of their vision blocked as these units are generally placed in line of sight on the dash or windshield? No need to buy additional chargers as the unit was shipped with both a 12 volt DC and 120 volt AC charger.

Moved to small unit - was using Streets & trips on laptop with a blue tooth receiver. Took too long to setup (unpacking laptop etc) for short trips so I ran into trouble occasionally. I'll focus on what I find convenient on this 1. Hotels - as I'm driving along interstate I can find hotels at increasing distance from where I am - phone numbers are there - I can dial through bluetooth on unit & phone. 2. Restuarants - in area you don't know, can search out in distance from where you are - find type / style / chain you want to go - hit the place and your route is mapped out.

Has only steered me wrong once - in rural Wisconsin a road had changed so it had me for a short period on a dead end road. Easy to "force" your way out of it, start heading in direction you know you are heading (West in this case) and soon it "reroutes" you and the dead end road was out of the picture.

Much better than laptop alternative for me all round. I haven't used Europe maps yet, or the traffic alert information. Startup time could be a bit better - but it does have to acquire the satellites.

Customer Review: Great device...but

I love the nuvi 370 so far. It's got a clear display and I can hear the directions just fine, as long as I'm not blasting my radio. May try plugging the nuvi into the radio via cassette adapter to see whether playing it through the speakers is a viable option for listening to audiobooks and MP3s.

The one "flaw" I've found thus far is in the traffic adapter. This isn't really a flaw, but something to watch for. While routing me around traffic the other day, it took me off of an expressway a couple of times to avoid jams by busy on/off ramps and then routed me back to the expressway. This worked very well and as designed. The problem is that the nuvi does not know a safe neighborhood from a dangerous neighborhood. While I followed the nuvi's directions in my hometown of Chicago, I was laughing to myself and saying "Nuvi, you're going to get me killed." For someone not familiar with the different areas of a major city and the various neighborhoods, you might consider NOT using the traffic adapter and just wait patiently on the highway when it backs up. It may be safer for you.

Customer Review: Garmin nuvi 370 - a great choice

I've had a Garmin 360 for a couple of years, but I am going to vacation in Germany this summer and I wanted a Garmin that would help me find "Gerta Strasse."

I needed to update my old nuvi with U.S. updates, but for the price to update both U.S. and European maps, I paid only a few extra bucks to get my 370.

Word of advice: Buy Garmin. Garmins are so absolutely intuitive that a newbie could operate one without the printed directions. I prefer the smaller, 3.5" screens to the larger, 4.5" screens that Garmin offers. I would hope that I'm LISTENING to the directions, and not WATCHING the screen while I drive. I highly advise buying a Garmin model that actually speaks the street name. This feature gives me the ability to hear the street, so that I can keep my eyes on the road.

Lastly, the Garmin telephone support is fabulous. I used them multiple times, since my new Garmin 370 needed updates. The customer support staff were helpful beyond anything we're used to these days. They helped me transfer all of my saved locations from my 360 to my 370.

Customer Review: Very Useful Product
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased the Garmin nuvi 370 just before we left on a trip from Colorado to Arizona. I entered most of our destination addresses into our favorites before we left. This made it easy to select our daily destinations. Plus we found gas stations, restaurants and hotels, on our trip quite easily. While we were in Phoenix, the traffic transmitter nofitied us of congestion and detours. However while in Tucson, the traffic transmitter didn't recognize the detours needed, around major contruction on I-10. Overall is was very helpful and provided useful verbal directions to most places. Since is portable, it could easily be transferred to other vehicles too.
Other than the inconsistent response of the traffic transmitter, the only other negative, is that the some areas, the maps can become outdated. But 99% of the time, it is accurate. The cost to get an annual map update is $69.99. If you do a lot of traveling to unfamiliar cities, I would highly recommend it, because it is easy to use and you don't need numberous big paper maps to fumble with, when you travel.
