Customer Review: Well worth it if you plan to keep your current GPS for a long length of time
Summary: 5 Stars

Now that Garmin has gone from annual map updates to "up to 4 times a year", the lifetime map update if well worth the price. There are some things to consider though. First and most importantly, the updates are only good for the life of your current GPS. If you have an old GPS, or you like to purchase a new GPS frequently, then it may not be for you. Also, some people have had problems purchasing the service from 3rd party vendors due to their Garmin cards being invalid. This can be caused by the vendors not activating them before sending them out, or just bad cards coming from Garmin. I spent a few extra dollars, and bought the service directly from the Garmin website, and it worked flawlessly. I've already gotten 2 maps updates in the last few months.

Just a note too. Garmin has just released a map update on 7/30/2009. CN 2010.20 is now available.

Customer Review: Such a Deal!

Just to clarify, this is a "gift card" with a code on the back that you use to validate your purchase on the Garmin website. Once you activate it, you download the Garmin install application and run that application to download and install the latest maps. For me, the download and install took a couple of hours, so you should allow that much time while you're not using your computer.

This is a great deal, because it goes for $90 on the Garmin website. Also, you can update your maps up to four times a year. A one-time update from Garmin is $50, so you if you update more than once with this product you're already ahead.

You will need a cable for attaching your GPS unit to your computer. I had some difficulty getting my computer to recognize my unit using my cheap cable. You can get a good cable from Amazon for under $5.

Customer Review: Map Update - a Breeze!
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this Lifetime MapUpdate for my Nuvi 755T with some trepidation, based on the reviews on this site. I was worried about the product code not working on the Garmin site and the hassle I would have to deal with if this was the case. I did contact the Amazon dealer from whom I purchased my card, and he replied that he had not had any problems for several months with the codes. I also found out from further research that this problem happened early in the distribution of the cards and had been corrected. I did not have any problem arriving at the point where you enter the code, as some reported. There is a link that says "gift card activation." My code was good, and I began the download and installation process. Everything went literally like clockwork. Just allow enough time to allow the process to work and it is seamless!

Customer Review: Free Map Updates for the life of your Garmin
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my Garmin to use instead of a Ford factory system that Ford stopped providing map updates for, after only two years. I'm a REALTOR. I need my maps to be current. Ford charged me $199.00 each for updates that came once a year (so, twice). Garmin charges $100.00 one time and it lasts as long as your Garmin does. I think you can update your maps as frequently as every 3 months. What a deal!! If you live in an area where streets don't change, you may not need this. If you live near any major metropolitan area, buying the lifetime map update is a no brainer! Buying them here on Amazon even saved me a couple of bucks. What you are buying is something that looks like a credit card with a serial number and a web site address printed on it. The serial number is what you use to activate your map subscription.

Customer Review: Great deal for map updates.

My car manufacturer charges $349 for EACH of their annual map updates to the built-in GPS. With this item I'm able to get quarterly updates, for the life of my unit, for far less. It's quite a deal and something I would recommend to anyone that lives in an area like Northern VA that is growing at an enormous pace with new roads appearing constantly.

For all those that are doing it, please stop comparing this to TomTom MapShare. You can NOT add new roads with MapShare. You can mark roads as closed, and change road names, update speed limits, but you can NOT move roads or create new ones. Community based updates are NOT the same as professional updates. I own a TomTom with MapShare, and while I appreciate finding out that a road no longer accepts traffic, it doesn't compare to a full map update.
