Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map UpdatesCustomer Review: A few notes Summary: 5 Stars
If my memory serves me correctly, this is my first Amazon review.
Overall, this is a very good deal. I have a Nuvi 370 bought in 2007. My new apartment address is not in the map, now it shows in the GPS. a couple notes:
1. Don't be intimidated. The whole process is very easy, basically you are just waiting.
2. Before you start, you better create an account first and need to download Garmin communicator plugin.
3. Log in your account. Type a new link on the back of the card to activate map.
4. Select your device to link the map to your device.
5. Plug in your GPS, and start download.
6. Wait....
7. Run the downloaded map file (with device linked), the update process starts. I select save the new map to the default location.
8. Wait... for about 3-4 hours. Basically it is transferring new map to your GPS to replace the old one.
9. Done.
Hope it helps.
Customer Review: Works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
The Lifetime updates appear to work as described by others. Presuming you have a Garmin account, the activation is easy and the install process easy enough, although as others have described, it will take some time. I think for me, it was near 40 minutes total for my Garmin Nuvi 1300 via an ATT high speed connection 10 Mb/sec.
I have had this item in my Wish List on Amazon for some time and have watched the price fluctuate and pounced when it hit $59. I have paid almost a $100 for a one time update via Garmin for my now sold Street Pilot 2730, so I think this is a very good value. There is some inconsistencies in the information though, the information on either Amazon or Garmin says that my old Street Pilot was not supported by the Lifetime updates and the other did. Had I known this, I might have been tempted to keep my Street Pilot since it also had a built in XM radio receiver and antenna.
Customer Review: Saved $22 bucks even after figuring in shipping charges Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't sure about making this purchase, but I received the package in the mail containing a shrink-wrapped update card the size of a credit card, so it looked good. But then when I went to the Garmin website to update the maps, it wanted me to enter a "product key". Well the card had a product key area on the back, but there was an unreadable black space with wavy lines through it. I thought that maybe I'd been duped. Well my bad. Called Garmin and after being on hold about 30 minutes (I'm serious), they said scratch off the area on the back. Well I felt pretty dumb, but there were no instructions and I've never seen a plastic scratch off before. Go figure why they don't just show the key, because the card was inside one of those 3-hour pliars/razor blade shrink-wraps. So after a scratch-off followed by a very long online update process on the Garmin site (took at least an hour or longer), I'm in business.
Customer Review: What's not to love?? Summary: 5 Stars
For someone with a Garmin, this is the ONLY way to do your updates. For little more then what an annual update would cost you, you can have lifetime updates and not have to worry about your maps ever being outdated. Took all of 5 minutes to go through the activation process, another hour to do the download, about 45 minutes for the Garmin to do the install of the new maps and viola, all set for the road. I'll do it over again in just a few months and always be up to date. One thing I like on this update........when you are going down the road and you exceed the posted speed limit that you see on the Garmin, once you get above what it should be the speed numbers turn from black to red and stay that color until you get below the posted limit again. Nothing earth shattering, but just a cool feature that wasn't on my unit before. Grab this and never be using old outdated maps again!
Customer Review: Keeping your maps up to date for less Summary: 5 Stars
I like the Garmin nuMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates because it is a much better value than purchasing the one-time use map update, especially if purchased through Amazon. Amazon's final price was about $35 less than direct purchase from Garmin or through other leading retailers. For the life of one Garmin device you can update your maps up to four times per year which is about how often a new map is released. It did take about 3 hours to complete the update using a high-speed internet connection, but it was very straight-forward to do. This product is simply a packaged card with a scratch off on the back that reveals your code for unlocking and downloading your map updates from the Garmin website. Save the code in a safe place for future updates after you use it for the first time. I recommend this product because it is the best value for keeping your maps up to date.
