Having spent $350 for my Garmin GPS Nuvi 760, I was very resentful of the fact that Garmin gouges it's customers anywhere from $60 to $70 for each one-time update. So I refused to update my N. America maps for 4 years until this NuMaps LIfetime Updates version was introduced. It was worth the wait and also I'm glad I bought it from Amazon.com. I'd rather buy from Amazon.com any day over Garmin's store. Not only was Amazon's price 30% lower than Garmin's, their customer service is miles ahead of Garmin's.
The potential risks: Ensure you follow Garmin's activation, download and installation steps methodically and completely. Do not abort the process or disconnect the GPS midway. If you need your GPS in a hurry, keep the activation and update for another time. Should the data on your GPS get corrupted, Garmin will will have a field day charging you big bucks to repair it besides having you ship it to them and have them ship it back to you at your cost. They don't offer customer service locally. The updates take time. Mine took over an hour but the updated maps are great and very current.

It took me about 8 days to finally figure out why it wouldn't work on my new windows 7 computer. The program they had at the Garmin site wouldn't let it completely download. There was a person on the reviews (it was either the Garmin reviews or these reviews)that said that there was a shorter version that would enable me to download the Garmin product. I downloaded that first then I tried the Garmin Nu-Map and it finally installed fine. I do not know the name of it, and it would take me quite some time to find it probably. It also took 15 hours to complete the install with high speed dial up. By the way, I did rate this 5 star because it was not Garmins fault it took me so long. When you purchase a new computer now days it is up to you to get and install the needed software, plus there is no recovery disks, you have to make your own. You do get the basic software, but nothing to help me install the Garmin product. I hope this helped some. I use Amazon all the time and the items arrive on time with absolutely no problems. Just finished installing the lifetime update. If you follow the instructions on the back of the card and then follow the on screen prompts, it will install easily. Be prepared, however. It does take a long time. The download took me almost four hours; and this is with a DSL high speed connection. After download, you have to extract the files and install them onto your GPS. This took another two hours.
However, the wait is worth it. There are some new streets in our small Southern Arizona community that were just built (within the last few months). These streets are already in the database for this update. Amazing.
I would highly recommend this update for anyone. Just be sure to check the website for compatibility for your unit. Considering annual updates cost as much as $69.95, this item will pay for itself in less than two years. A must have if you do any traveling. I don't even take a map with me anymore. My Garmin Nuvi leads me to addresses that other (cheapie) units don't have in their data bases.

I have been considering updating my Garmin, but didn't want to spend the money and I didn't figure that it would be that much different for just a year or two. I was definitely wrong. When my buddy "Garmin" started getting me lost (a couple of times) I decided I would take the plunge. Buying the Lifetime Updates just made sense to me.
The installation took a while. Since a lot of posts said that it took a while to download,I got it going on my computer and went to work. When I got home at the end of the day, the installation was finished, so not sure how long it took.
Then I decided to try it out and see if it updated the new highway 71 between Rogers, AR and Missouri. Every time I had gone, it showed that I was out in a field and I heard that wonderful "recalculating" many times. Sure enough, it was updated! The highway hasn't been finished that long, so I was pretty impressed.
I haven't had a chance to go on any long road trips since the update, but when I do I will be sure to update.

If you have an older Garmin GPS or a newer one that does not come with lifetime map updates, this is a very good buy and value, if you are going to continue to use your GPS. The Map Update does exactly as it says it will do. You'll first have to register your new Lifetime Maps Update on the Garmin site, under your account. Then, each time you update your GPS, plan on taking 1-2 hours to complete the entire update cycle, depending on the speed on your computer and your internet connection. You have to connect your GPS to your computer through a USB Cable. When your unit is identified, it then checks to see if you qualify for an update. Once you have been approved, you will choose to Update your MAPS. It will take a few minutes to DOWNLOAD the map data to your computer, then 30 min - 1 Hr to "install" the new Map Updates to your GPS.
Though it takes a while to complete, once everything starts, it's pretty much plug-and-chug. Get it going, then leave the room and let it do it's thing.
