Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates

Customer Review: Well Worth The Money!!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My family currently has 4 Garmin devices. I have owned my Garmin 780 for a few years and bought the lifetime map udpates about 18 months ago. I am absolutely thrilled with the lifetime updates and at this new lower price it is well worth the money. I agree with other reviews that I have seen indicating that you should probably only buy this with a fairly new GPS. Since the update is married to one device you will lose the investment if you don't keep the GPS at least a year or two. However, if you do plan to keep the GPS for at least two years then the lifetime update is actually cheaper than paying for two yearly updates. Plus, the lifetime update allows you to update the maps 4 times per year. So in esence that is almost 4 updates per year compared to 1 if you just buy the regular yearly update. If you travel a lot the quarterly udpates are very nice.

Keep in mind that most of the Garmin batteries seem to go bad at about the two year point from what I have expereinced and what other have written. So if your GPS is two years old you may not want to buy this lifetime update.

Lastly, if you are in the market for a new GPS, Garmin now makes models that come with lifetime maps and/or lifetime traffic. I would seriously consider this if you are buying new since they aren't much more expensive (if at all) and will save you from ever having to pay for updates.

Customer Review: Don't Believe the low ratings for this product
Summary: 5 Stars

Before buying a product I generally look at all of the negative ratings to determine 1) if there is any merit to them; and 2) to give me a 'heads up' as to any potential issues that I might not have been aware of otherwise.
After reading several reviews showing that the item would not install correctly, etc etc, I called Garmin to ask them about both the product as well as whether Amazon was an authorized seller of their product.
I was more than satisfied with their answers, and where I needed the updates for one of my Garmin 265WT's, I went forward and purchased it from Amazon.
Just to be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I would not enter any incorrect information, I called Garmin and had the representative go through each step with me. She was a real trooper about it, and in retrospect I really didn't need her assistance; but I certainly did not want to have a 'failed' installation either.
Note that the 'Retail' price has dropped on this product...which is another reason to keep your maps up to date.
In retrospect I think that the reviewers who wrote negative reviews on this product may have been trying to use it on more than one GPS unit. Note that the product key is linked to your GPS serial number. This avoids someone from using the map updates on more than one GPS unit.

Customer Review: Sweet
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the lifetime card to keep my Garmin Nuvi 360 updated. I always dreaded buying a map update because the maps are updated so often that it just didn't seem very economical. I've been waiting for this type of "lifetime" subscription. You can't beat the value and ease of use of the lifetime update. The size of the map update is around 2 gigs so if you're internet connection is slow, you'll need to let this run for several hours. I have a 50 down 20 up Fios connection so this was no problem for my connection. The upate is fairly simple and straight-forward. After the update, my device now finds addresses that it previously couldn't locate. You'll need to keep in mind that you can only use 1 lifetime card per device, so if your garmin is lost, stolen, or becomes inoperable, you might as well throw your lifetime card in the trash. If you purchase the card froom Garmin, you'll pay $120, so purchasing from amazon (at this time $94.90) will save you 25 bucks. I also learned about a feature of the garmin called "Garmin Lock", this allows you to put a 4 digit password on your device so if someone steals your Garmin, at least you'll know the thief won't have the satisfaction of using it. The lifetime update is definitely worth the price.

Customer Review: Don't throw out that nuvi 350!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought my nuvi 350 (from Amazon) 7/07. I love using it. I recently installed this map update, because the new interstate (I-99)was not on my 2007 unit. Well, it is now! I choose the lifetime update package. It was a lot cheaper on Amazon than from Garmin. What you get is a plastic card w/ a product key. If you have not already registered your unit w/ Garmin, do so. During this process, you will install the proper plugin so Garmin can communicate w/ your unit. When you are ready to install the new maps, hook up your unit, go to garmin & follow the links & directions. Be sure you have plenty of time. The download is over 2Gb. It took my fairly fast computer a little over 2 hours to do the download. When the download is complete, it will auto upload to your unit. This also took a bit of time. I think over an hour...don't know, I went to bed. Anywho, in the morning I checked to see if the newly opened section of I-99 was there, & it was. This was a lot cheaper than turning around & buying a new unit. The nuvi 350 is a great unit. I like it because it was inexpensive, & I can enter UTM's, something I could not do w/ a more expensive Magellan unit.

Customer Review: Easy but long update plus they did not send me what I ordered
Summary: 5 Stars

Received the update item in a reasonable time however, what I ordered was a DVD and not a gift card. What I received was the gift card. No real problem but just more of a hassle to get it activated correctly with my Garmin account. Would have prefered getting what I ordered.

The update went well but it takes about 3 hours to do. The actual download of information to the computer took close to 2.5 hours, then about 30 seconds for the PC to organize it and another 25 minutes to load it into my Garmin 255W. All went well but for a very fast internet connection that I was using, why does it take so long to do this??

The reason I ordered the DVD was that I assumed all I ended updownloading, was on the DVD and I wouldn't have to take the time it took to update my GPS unit.

So Digital Pavillion (who I purchased from via Amazon) delivered the product in a reasonable time but it was not what I ordered.

So for Digital Pavillion I'll give 4 stars for reasonable service but only 3 stars because they did not send me what I ordered. I'll give Garmin 2 stars for the unreasonable download and update time.
