Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS ReceiverCustomer Review: Perfect for beginners Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this GPS for my wife's use. I have a Garmin Map60C, which she feels is too complicated to use comfortably, and finds too large to tote around. The entire eTrex line is excellent, but the Venture model offers the opportunity, IMHO, for a beginner to expand their use. The memory for loading different maps was key to the decision to purchase the Venture HC. The display is bright, and easily adjusted to help conserve battery life. Scrolling through the pages is easy, particularly if you take the time to set them up. I was worried about how reliably the enter/rocker key would work, but neither of us has had any problems using it. As with any technical piece of equipment, it can't be emphasized enough: read the operator's manual, not just the quick start guide.
Customer Review: great for the money and free topo maps Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for under one hundred dollars to go hiking on th A.T. It does allow u to download topo maps. Eve tho it has small amount of memory (24mb) you get to select your portion of the topo map you want. I am only doing a portion of the App Trail in Ga so I selected 2 blocks of the northern part of Ga which contained the App Trail. It used 8.3mb of RAM. Also I read that the 24mb of RAM is separate from the memory that is used for waypoints and tracks (meaning the 24mb is set aside for maps).
The unit is really easy to use and learn to use. The software is good to. You can find free topo maps online. I got the whole US and just select what I need. The maps are just as good if not better than garmins.
Customer Review: eTrex Venture HC Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this GPS mainly to do some personal geocaching for when my grandsons came for a week visit. It is simple to navigate the pages and set waypoints and the accuracy was very good and got the guys usually within six feet of the point I had hidden a cache. And some of these were under heavy tree cover and it worked excellent there as well.
The basemap in this price range GPS does not get you a detailed map. However, that really was not an issue for finding a cache. We used the data page with the pointer and that always took us right to the cache. Maybe for the advanced geocachers, a more detailed basemap might be required, but this GPS should be fine for the entry or intermediate user.
Customer Review: GREAT Summary: 5 Stars
I am an avid geocacher. I bought this after testing and returning a geomate jr. I needed a new GPS and this product was cheap and did exactly what I needed. Downloading way points online takes all of 5 seconds and the range is good even under tree cover. I have gone out several time with this and have found numerous caches that I couldn't get before. Even under tree cover it lead me to about 3 feet away which is very doable. The GPS even comes with simple games which prove to be quite entertaining. My only minor complaint is that the downloading software doesn't work with Google Chrome but Firefox works just fine. Overall a great reliable product, especially for the money.
Customer Review: Best In Class Summary: 5 Stars
I went from the old B&W Garmin GPSII Plus to this little masterpiece and I have to say...WOW!!! Now there may be others on the market, but you cannot beat this quality at this price! The satellite reception was fast and accurate. It configured itself, right out of the box. The screen is colorful and bright with tons of unique little options that were all new to me. It is my opinion that Garmin is still at the top of the class when it comes to GPS devices. This sleek little device fits firmly in your hand and truly put my old GPS to shame. Quality and design are perfect for hikers, paddlers, trackers, hunters and mountaineers. This product is HIGHLY Recommended!!!
