Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin StreetPilot c580 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct

Customer Review: Like it a lot
Summary: 5 Stars

First-time GPS user. Had it about two weeks, and I've taken one out-of-town trip and a couple into the city. Chose the Garmin 580 because of some enhanced features, including the bluetooth/phone connection, the screen upgrade and most important, the Mac compatibility. Receiver works just as I'd hoped. It's easy to set up, is extremely fast at calculating routes; I can see the screen in bright sunshine with no problems, the bluetooth phone feature is so good I don't even have to take the phone out of my purse. It announces street names and gives me plenty of notice. When I don't follow the route it chooses, it doesn't yell at me (as I'm told some do, as in "You've made a wrong turn!") Instead it simply recalculates the route.

Only quibble is with the MSN Direct service (as a Mac person, I know, I shouldn't be surprised). In my metro area (St. Louis), information is somewhat limited, mostly to construction on the major interstates (although today it did recognize some construction in my suburban area), and it appears to be dated -- more than a week after construction was ended on a major road, it's still trying to route me through downtown to avoid it. According to the msn Web site, it doesn't monitor speed here, so I don't think I'm getting traffic slowdowns, although it does recalculate arrival time for the road construction sites.

But it's free for a year, plenty of time to evaluate, and it is offered in my annual vacation city, too.

UPDATE: When I got to my favorite vacation city (Daytona Beach, Fla.) the unit got confused, and I had to go online (on my Mac) and in effect, reregister at MSN and tell it that, yes, I want Daytona Beach traffic info. The MSN feature did finally recognize my unit there (but it did take longer than it should have, and still does, I think, when you move from one covered area to another). But when I returned home, it did recognize I was home. And a couple of weeks ago, when I was in Chicago, it did pick that up, too, after a while longer than I thought it should have. But that's not the unit; that's the MSN feature.....

Bottom line after nearly a year of use (and a much bigger pricetag than they're offering now), I like the unit and am still glad I bought it, albeit at a much higher price. I've used the bluetooth phone feature a lot-- in several different parts of the country -- and love it because I'm not into the earphone thing for my cell. I use it on regular trips just to see my ETA, which is pretty darned accurate. And GPS Jill, as I've come to call it (the American English voice feature) has helped me find my way in unfamiliar places enough times to make me leave my rating as it is at five stars. She doesn't yell, she just kind of sighs and says "recalculating," and sends me on my way when I decide to disregard her instructions. And just last weekend, she got me where I wanted to go in a part of Chicago where I was totally unfamiliar. And, for the most part, the directions are intuitive -- mostly right turns in Chicago, for example.

At this price, I expect it's being phased out in favor of the slimline Garmin nuvi units. Amazon has a great price, for the features you get, right now on c580. It's not that big; I put it in my purse when I don't want to leave it in the car. I'd recommend this unit at this price with no hesitation. Lots of good features for a bargain price.

One more thing: I did buy the beanbag mount and don't use the included windshield mount, chiefly because of the increased threat of theft for GPS units everywhere you go. You can't measure a negative, as in, it hasn't been stolen yet anywhere I've used it. But I feel better having it, and have used it in rental cars as well as my own.
