Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Portable Friction Mount

Customer Review: Pretty good, it really doesn't move off the dashboard
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this bean bag type mount very useful and igenious, though it does kind of remind you of War of the World (the non-Tom Cruise movie version) of the alien spaceship doesn't it? But seriously, it works great with the 4 bean bag ends that helps weight it down, plus the base material bottom is tacky as well so that helps to keep it from sliding off. I use it to hold my Nuvi 650 quite nicely. It looks somewhat big when you hold it in your hand out of the packaging/card it comes on, but once you place it on your dashboard, you hardly think anymore that its big. Realize it only comes with that ball joint end, you still have to pop easily on, the other part that comes with your Garmin windshield mount to it. When you leave your car, just put it on the passenger floor board out of sight to keep folks from breaking into your car to take your GPS as the windshield mount is a dead giveaway that the car has one. The only other concern you might have is, you probably need a bigger carrier to hold it if you are the type that takes it with you when you lock your car. I use those insulated plastic lunch bags with a carry strap, you know the type you see in the office break room refrigerator, for it with my garmin gps unit to carry it around as well at times. It fits quite nicely in that size carrier.

Customer Review: Much better than I expected!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this friction dashboard mount because I had to order up to 5 regular mounts the past year for my GPS device, because they would no longer stick. Unfortunately after the one year is up the mounts are not covered by warranty and are too expensive. I thought this new dashboard mount would only perform slightly better than the old mount and would eventually slide off to the ground. But I have thus far experienced NO problems with this friction mount and I am VERY PLEASED! :)

The price on Amazon.com is a great bargain and is much cheaper than in stores. I highly recommend this mount for those of you who are beyond frustrated with the pesky sticky mount that originally came with the GPS device. You can keep your eyes on the road and stay safe with this mount. The GPS holds on like a rock! It is extremely easy to install and a previous customer had a video review on the benefits of this device which influenced my decision in making the purchase. This is one of the most significant purchases I believe you will ever make! You definitely won't be disappointed, but if you are you can return it to Amazon for a full refund (you just have to pay $2.50 return shipping).

Just remember not to leave the GPS in plain sight when you leave your vehicle. 6 star device!

Customer Review: Works as Intended
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually bought two of these. One for my wife to use with her Garmin GPS and one for use with my Moto Droid. First off, the mount works great with the Garmin GPS. Does what it says and is easy to use and hide if needed. My Droid has GPS capabilities that work well enough and I bought the Verizon Motorola GPS kit for the Droid. The Moto connector fits great with this friction mount and I use that. The friction works as expected, but I would say it is "grippier" in my wife's car than mine. However, it still works great, but I cannot put it as close as I hoped. I like being able to hide it quick so I don't advertise that I have a GPS in the car (though I take my Droid since it is my phone). One other thing I like is that since I can put my GPS closer to me, it does not block my view as much. Now that does not seem like a big deal, but it does reduce the "distraction" of having something on your windshield when you can move it down the slope of the dash a bit. At least in my circumstance, the power connector is on the the bottom of the phone and not angled, so you have to have a minimum amount of clearance to keep the power plugged in, which takes up more room on the windshield.

Overall, I recommend if you have a Garmin or in my case the Droid with the GPS kit.

Customer Review: Just got this today
Summary: 5 Stars

Just got this today and it is in manufacturer's condition, new unopened.

The item looks good and its got 1 maybe 2 key feature.

Its got a really good rotation and lock feature that allows you to fix a position for the ball and prong and lock it. So rotate it how you like and switch the lever to lock. The locking mechanism looks strong and secure.

The other feature is the removal of ball and prong so that you can put the device to another holder. I'm not sure what other accessory you can put this in.

This item is pretty heavy. Some reviews says this item may move but all I can see is if you are either a rectless driver or you may have placed the device somewhere it shouldn't to make it move.

The friction base is sturdy. All I am afraid of is it wearing out and become a smooth surface after repeated rubbing against it. (Dirt may also be in the factor) Do not put this on any fabric material cause it will move. The base is made of a thin, plasticky foam that sticks to surface. It may melt if under the sun for too long. Because it is a thin and soft plastic, I am also afraid that it will rip the bottom over useage.

So far, I am satisfied for the $26 price tag. Anymore and it will be not worth it.

Customer Review: I love this thing
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for a trip to California when I learned that they do not permit you to affix anything to your windshield. Now that I'm back in Ohio, the windshield mount has remained in the box. It took only a moment to attach part of the mount that came with my Nuvi to this friction mount. The mount is smaller than it looks, and it took up surprisingly little room in my carry-on when I carried it onto the plane.

Most importantly, the thing really does stay put. I drive in a fairly "spirited" manner, and before buying it I had visions of it flying off the dash. But it has yet to move an inch. So far I've used it in a Mazda RX-8, a Chrysler 300, a Nissan Maxima, and a Dodge Durango. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that my Nuvi 350 is fairly small and light.

When I arrive somewhere I simply lift it off the dash to toss it in the trunk or on the floor behind the driver's seat. If you take the GPS unit off of it, it actually fits in the compartment under my center arm rest (except in the RX-8). It also makes it really easy to bring the GPS in the house or to move it from car to car.

All in all, a great little device. Perhaps a bit pricey for something so simple, but well worth it at the end of the day.
