I just got my first GPS, a hand held version (Garmin) in the fall and planned on using it mostly for hiking. I needed Topo information for the mountains I hike and this software is working very nicely for me. I would give it a 5 except that I have found several flaws in the road layouts and it has no trails in the Catskill Mountains of New York. I have used it hiking in the Catskills, the Grand Canyon, and in the Mojave preserve in CA with good results. It helps you see where you have been as well as you progress when traveling. I also use it considerably more often while driving and other then a handful of roads displayed incorrectly both in New Jersey and California it's been great for finding locations and for seeing where I've been. I also ran into a few shortcomings with regards to routing to locations but I don't know if that's an issue of this software or the GPS but it sometimes suggests routs that are not possible because the roads don't have an exit or similar errors.Customer Review: TOPO Map for Garmin

I am new to the GPS hobby, as a walker/hiker/biker, and wanted to upgrade both my GPS inventory of tools, and my skill using them. I have the Garmin GPSMAP 60, and needed some mapping software to use with it. The TOPO is as it is advertised: a US Continental map, loaded with information, color, symbols, menus, and mapping tools. It is overwhelming at times, but still very interesting to use. I find the lack of drop down menus, to assist the ham-handed rookies among us, to be needed. I often find myself asking,"Why does it do that?". It is possible to switch back and forth between your GPS and the laptop, which makes the whole operation seem surrealistic. It is truly like living in the future. I am still jazzed by this purchase, and often just look at the maps because they are cool to look at. You can have a lot less fun and spend a whole lot more money. This is a good deal, and you may even learn something about maps.Customer Review: Topo to go

Works well in the Etrex Legend, and is acceptable for those using a handheld for hiking, mountain biking, atv riders, or hunters. The area you are using will have to be downloaded into your unit, and in my case (an Etrex Legend) I could only load a two county area. So keep this in mind and plan your trip accordingly. The software performs well on my laptop as well as a desktop, and the quality of the USGS maps is good compared to other sources. A trip to the local sporting goods stores revealed that the price varies from 50.00 usd to 145.00 usd so shrewd shoppers can find a great deal with a little effort. Be sure to register your GPS unit and software in case you encounter any problems. (Garmin offers a restore on their website for registered units) A good product for those who enjoy scouting areas and printing maps.Customer Review: Works well, very helpful

This is an immense improvement over the last version of the topo, which had almost no roads listed by name. The product is easy to use, is intuitive, and makes mapping out routes, seeing trails taken, and finding GPS coordinates a cinch.
My only complaints:
1) its 100K:1 so the detail is obviously lacking. It's good enough for basic stuff, but there are times that I'm kayaking thru solid/wetlands, or there are streams shown on the map that sure are invisible to my eyes.
2) it still seems not to be fully up to date, be it water, land or streets. Its certainly not up to date as of late 2007.
But, overall it adds a lot of extra value to having a GPS on the water and trail, and I make heavy use of it.

This product seems to have everything that I need to keep my gps adventures
on track. Going with the cd version for the computer and downloading maps as I need them works well. This also lets me upload tracks and waypoints
onto my computer to store and plan routes, and connect waypoints with pictures or web links. I haven't had any problems with this software so far. There also is a link to view your map and waypoints on google earth.
(this requires a download from google) but is a very cool feature.
This software has many features which I haven't yet explored them all but most of the usual items are self explanatory.
