Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin GXM 30 Weather and Audio XM Satellite Receiver (requires subscription)Customer Review: Pricey, but certainly nice Summary: 5 Stars
I've now used the GXM30 for a month and am happy with it. Unlike the antennas that I've used in the past for listening to XM radio on other motorcycles or in my truck, this design doesn't suffer from reception issues. I have ridden through the Sierras, as well as in built-up areas (San Francisco), never having lost a signal. In fact, it even receives a strong signal when the bike's in the garage with the door closed!
My only complaint would be that the unit is huge compared to other antennas, but it also has the actual receiver in it, so I can't complain too much. It's not a passive unit, so it does generate some heat, but never enough to be an issue as to where it's mounted. I have noticed that the mounting angle is somewhat critical, but as long as it's somewhat level, the reception is phenominal.
Absolutely recommended if you have a GPS that acts as an XM control head, versus having a GPS plus a (non-waterproof) XM radio receiver/antenna also mounted on the bike. Additionally, by using the GXM30 through a ZUMO 550, I have had no grounding issues or other forms of interference problems. Nice combination that works very, very well. Too bad it's so pricey.
Description of Garmin GXM 30 Weather and Audio XM Satellite Receiver (requires subscription)GXM 30 XM smart antenna delivers XM Satellite Radio, NavTraffic and Weather services to your compatible Garmin. Roughly 3 inches in diameter, the GXM 30 processes all XM information and sends the finished data to your unit for display. The GXM 30 requires a XM Satellite subscription(s). Traffic services are available only in select cities where XM Nav Traffic coverage exists. The compact, all-in-one GXM 30 delivers XM satellite weather, traffic, and radio to your compatible Garmin GPS navigator. With the GXM 30 and a subscription to one of XM's satellite services, you can check the weather, avoid traffic backups, or listen to commercial-free radio while driving with your navigator in tow. Setting up the GXM 30 is quick and easy: simply position the antenna where it has a clear view of the sky and connect it directly to the USB port on your GPS receiver. Once you've chosen the XM subscription that best fits your needs, you'll start receiving XM satellite services immediately. The type of information you receive depends on your subscription package. XM NavTraffic notifies you of accidents, road construction, and weather-related traffic delays before you encounter them, and then offers an alternate route on your GPS. XM WX Weather, meanwhile, brings real-time animated weather data directly to your screen, letting you steer clear of bad weather or choose a less snowy mountain pass, for instance. Finally, XM satellite radio offers dozens of commercial-free music, talk, sports, and news stations--one for virtually every genre in existence. The GXM 30, which measures roughly 3 inches in diameter, fits the following Garmin navigators: the GPSMap 376C, GPSMap 378, GPSMap 478, GVN 52, StreetPilot 2820, StreetPilot 7200, StreetPilot 7500, StreetPilot 2730, and zumo 550. It's also backed by a one-year warranty. What's in the Box GXM30 satellite antenna, user's manual.
