Customer Review: Can't take your eyes off of it.
Summary: 4 Stars

I left Denver International Airport with my Garmin GPSIII Plus. I put it close to the window by my seat and watched. It was remarkable how every turn of the jet in the airport was faithfully reported by this unit and when we took of it showed the liftoff speed etc. Climbing out of Denver, it showed just where we were, our speed, ETE, ETA etc. Arriving in Chicago, I had to change planes to a smaller jet. Upon taking off, it was a real trip to watch Lake Michigan both out the window as well as on the GPS. The visual display and the look of the lake and the cities by the lake looked pretty much the same on the unit or out the window. It was fun and informative to watch how the Air Route Controllers do not direct the planes to the the destination by the most direct route. Anyway upon reaching Washington D.C it was a real nice to have it with me to navigate our nation's capitol. It is pricey but worth it. On the down side, the software did not show some of the streets in my suburban neighborhood and the software should have been a little more up to date when I bought it.

Customer Review: great toy!
Summary: 4 Stars

Actually, calling this a toy takes a little bit of the dignity away from something that is truly powerful and useful with it. I use my newly-acquired III+ so as not to get lost. It picks up the reception just fine through the windshield of my car while the machine is on my dash. I'm pretty impressed with the battery life too; much better than I had originally thought. The tracking is spot-on. My only complaint (a tiny one) is the fact that the machine appears to take a long time getting started once you turn it on before heading out. Obviously, it's trying to acquire as many satellites as possible, but sometimes (eg. while driving out of my building's garage) it just gives up after a few minutes and throws you a map of the USA, asking for a verification of where you are. So then you have to respond (press Enter a couple of times) which isn't too great when you're trying to maneuver out onto the street with oncoming traffic. But anyhow, this doesn't always happen. Very flexible little gizmo, weighs almost nothing (about a pound).

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 4 Stars

I own Garmin GPS III Plus for over 6 months and I love it. I purchased it with the cartridge for Columbus, GA and it is very detailed and precise. Too many Pros to list - simply a great unit. Some cons: - Sometimes (10% of the time) it is up to couple hundred feet off, which may at times put you on a different street. - There are several newer streets missing, but more then 95% of even the small streets and roads are there. - You can fairly easily locate your destination, but Garmin doesn't calculate any suggested way of getting there. It only shows straight line from where you are to your destination. But I was able to calculate my trip from Columbus to Tampa using StreetAtlas USA and upload to Garmin (special cable required)

Garmin posted some software updates for this unit but I don't know if they solve any of the above issues. At the time I bought it, Garmin didn't sell the US Map on a CD-ROM (MapSource) and blank cartridges to create your own maps; now they do.

Customer Review: Very good GPS package!
Summary: 4 Stars

The Garmin GPS III+ is a very competent performer, and has worked well in any kind of weather, even on the dash of my truck! It is very sturdy, and I frequently use it mounted on the handle of my bicycle with no trouble. It's built in maps are sufficient for most travel applications, unless you do a lot of secondary road travel, then you will need to buy the CD and download the detailed maps. My only complaint with this unit is the size of the screen. It is very hard to make out detailed locations on the screen while traveling. I find that if I'm in a pinch, I'll have to stop somewhere to really look closely at the unit. Other than that, it is a fine performer! I would recommend the 12V power adapter cord with this unit as battery life is good, but it will use up 4 in a 10 hour day.

Customer Review: This was my first GPS
Summary: 4 Stars

This GPS has been mounted on the dash of my Explorer for well over a year. Being my first GPS this one has always been my favorite, but the small amount of RAM is a bit of a problem for me these days. I typically use the MAPs from the ROM, but I also have several regions loaded from Garmin's Roads and Recreation CD--though not as many as I'd actually like. The features on this unit are great and the screen is very visible. With the bean bag mount, you can position the screen for the available lighting without any trouble. If you're thinking of taking this hiking, I would recommend the eMAP (8 Meg of RAM) or the ETrex Summit (better outdoor features). For heads up vehicle navigation, the GPS III is the best choice.
