Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin GPS III Waterproof Hiking GPSCustomer Review: Great Unit Summary: 5 Stars
I have this baby attached to my dash with velcro and have found it to be a great help in the city and in the country. I also use it hiking in the mountains. It's pretty handy for that as long as you keep the antenna high enough. I ended up sewing velcro to the shoulder strap of my backpack and mouted it with the antenna pointing up. Battery life is amazing and the accuracy is pretty good in the car. I usually get a good fix on 6 satellites from my car and that gives me position to about 60 feet--more than enough to tell what road you're on.
Customer Review: Never Get Lost Again! Summary: 5 Stars
I first used this while vacationing in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesauke. Since the lake is so big and everything looks the same when you are in the middle, the GPS was invaluable in telling me how to get back home. Plus the maps of the lake all have the coordinates of the buoys -- so you can punch them in and have an instant navigation aid.On the downside, my unit seems to take a while to acquire a signal - usually longer still when in heavy brush/woods. However I realize this is a built-in limitation of GPS units as a hole.
Customer Review: Large enough for dash, small enough for pack Summary: 5 Stars
This unit is the perfect size for double duty as a dash board unit and hiking companion. This is my third Garmin unit and first with a basemap. The base map makes it much more useful. Cons: Scrolling the base map can be time consuming. You will have to wait while map is loaded one screen full at a time. In a large city with lots of streets this can be frustrating. Editing routes is very tedious and usually requires resorting to manual to remember process.

Customer Review: This is the one......... Summary: 5 Stars
to get if you need a GPS for hiking and in the car or just to find your way around the downtown. It is a bit heavy for backpacking but I leave home my flashlight because I GOT to have it. This unit actually helped us find our way out of the Utah desert after our group leaders got us a bit "off track" saving us an unnecessary night out with the scorpions. Highly recommend.
