Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Etrex Legend GPS ReceiverCustomer Review: This is a pretty nifty gadget! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these for my boyfriend's birthday present this June. He travels a lot for work and he takes it with him EVERYWHERE. Here's a little story about how great this thing is...
We took a trip to the Charlestown races in WV and made a wrong turn into an area that looked like it was straight out of Deliverance. (SQUEEEAL!) Thanks to the ETrex Legend, his laptop and some additional software he purchased for it, we were back on track in a matter of minutes. He loaded in where we came from and where we were going. The eTrex told the software where we were and the laptop told us (yes, it spoke...voice recognition software is really cool) where to go to get back to civilization.
I think this is the best product I've ever purchased and I paid a lot more than what Target has it for now! A MUST HAVE!
Customer Review: Face down in the snow all winter, not me, the GPS Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this so I could map routes on my motorcycle. One day my instructor asked me to calibrate sensors on a wind resource assessment site. I used the gps functions like elevation, compass, and coordinates for the calibration. As I left I dropped the GPS in the field where the tower was located. It sat face down in the dirt all winter. Last winter Iowa had a lot of snow dumped, I figured that if I ever found it it would be junk. Months later in spring the class went out to the site and someone found my gps, I cleaned off the screen of dirt and hit the power button, to my surprise it fired up and started tracking satellites! Apparently the waterproofing seal really worked, and normally I don't think these devices are meant to survive the kind of punishment I put it through, but it still works perfect today.
Customer Review: Good Unit for geocaching - Beware of the thin blue line... Summary: 5 Stars
I've had mine for years, I bought it from Amazon circa 2003. Recently it gave me a 'thin blue line' on the left side after it acquired satellites. If yours does it, please update the on board software to version 3.90 or later. Software is available for download for free at garmin's website.
The problem stems from a new WAAS satellite launched in early 2008. The software patch fixes that. If you do not have WAAS turned, you will not see a problem, just your accuracy wont be as good as you would like it to be. I found the new update actually made the time to acquire a lot faster and its more sensitive now and picks up signals easier.
I love my Etrex Legend. From all the hiking I've done its never let me down until last weekend. So update your etrex and enjoy the outdoors.
Customer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have never used another GPS, so I cannot compare to others, but the Garmin eTrex Legend is everything I wanted in a GPS for the price I was willing to pay. I use it for hiking and geocaching and it's perfect. I did have to read some online sites to help me make better use of it (the manual has a lot of information, but presented with an assumption that you know how to use GPS).
I love how easy it is to get to the menu items and selections I want with just a click or two. I use rechargeable batteries and after several hours of use already, the capacity still shows full. I did lose satellite under tree cover which I assume is normal. I use the included cable to upload and download information to my pc which is very useful. Overall, I am extremely satisfied.
Customer Review: Perfect for geocaching newbies Summary: 5 Stars
Recently I began looking for a handheld GPS to enable my younger son and I to take up the hobby of geocaching together. I found a used eTrex Legend and it has been great! While it may not have all the bells and whistles of some of the newcomers, it is a solid unit that gets the job done.
One sticking point can be that it requires a serial port to connect to a computer, but once I found the Plugable USB to RS-232 DB9 Serial Adapter (Prolific PL2303HX Chipset), we were ready to roll. I can strongly recommend this product and have used it steadily since purchasing.
As they say about geocaching: "I use multimillion dollar satellites to hunt tupperware in the woods." But it's a great adventure, particularly to share with your child.
