Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Receiver

Customer Review: All the technology, for 1/10th the price...
Summary: 5 Stars

Although this is my first hand-held navigation unit, I have owned several vehicles with factory navigation systems. I have to say that this thing gets more accurate location information and has more options with the trip computer, not to mention that the "base" map is actually more detailed that the unit in my BMW, ... I guess the cost in the car nav is in the voice controls and the integration, because the Garmin unit does everything else better. Reception in my area is great, my average accuracy being around 25 feet (according to unit). I bought it for mountain biking and it works wonderful as trip computer information accuracy does not seem to be terribly affected by signal strength. My complaints are the same as others' with the handle-bar mount... the battery cover is loose and sometimes the batteries come dislodged and it shuts the unit off. My other complaint is with acquisition time as it takes 20-30 seconds. I'm impatient. Other than that, I love it.

Customer Review: Alaska Back Country
Summary: 5 Stars

This is very simple, I hiked this thing through a two day "Eco Challenge" in Kodiak, Alaska and it performed flawlessly. I dropped it. I banged it on rocks. I got it wet. I cussed at it because I was lost. :-) Yet no matter what indignity my team inflicted on this little blue gem, it kept on performing and it kept on showing me the way. The only thing that happened to it: well, of course, the batteries ran out when the rain came down the hardest and I had to get the VERY easy to use cover off the back and dig into my filthy back pack for a pair of AAs. Now after four years and countless batteries later, it resides on my motorcycle handlebar and tells me the time of day, my speed, and miles to go on my daily commute. Sun, rain, wind, this thing keeps on doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Great product. IF it ever breaks, I'll simply replace it with an exact copy and carry on for the next decade.

Customer Review: Great Product at a Great Price
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not sure I need all the fucntionality of this product - but ... it includes the PC interface cable .... You can pay more money and get less functionality with other models. I could hike with a lesser model -- but at this price there is no need to.

This goes through batteries pretty quickly -- especially since I use the backlight in all but direct sunlight. Anyone buying this should get a good recharger and four rechargable AAs.

Anyone buying should make sure they understand what level of map functionality they are getting. The basemap is pretty sparse -- major roads only. The only maps you can load are the Mapsource ones. They are quite detailed. I loaded Mapsouce Topo. It takes some getting used to -- lots of lines that aren't labeled. The Legend is great for general navigation in a car and hiking -- especially if paired with MSFT Streets and Trips and Natl Geo State Topos.

Customer Review: Workhorse of the budget GPSr's
Summary: 5 Stars

If you've ever been involved with an activity that utilizes GPS, you've run into this little wonder. It's usually the recommended device for geocaching beginners and it does its job well. After having this over a year, I have added higher end units but this is still my wife's staple and she loves it. It has just enought memory to get some good maps of your location and those can be a life saver.
Complaints of accuracy are unwarranted because that includes variables such as satellite locks, weather, trees, ect. You have to remember that when you are looking for something with coordinates given to you - those coordinates were created by another GPSr by someone who may not know what they are doing. In other words, the GPSr gives you direction to a target and then a 20-30 foot radius in which to search.
I would recommend this unit to everyone.

Customer Review: Excellent, rugged GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this unit for many years and it has been wonderful. I use it for rough-in surveying in my work, and also put it on the handlebars of my quad when I go trail riding. It has taken many hours of rough abuse, and yet it still works perfectly. It is even tolerant of getting wet... I usually just rinse it off with the hose after a long day of trail riding.

It's not good for in-car navigation.. the map is very hard to read on the small screen. But for trail riding, hiking, biking, etc... you can't go wrong. It also has a serial port which allows you to download tracks to Google Maps and Streets & Trips, and import maps from the Garmin MapSource software.

Our office has about 8 of these units, and I don't think a single one has failed yet.

I definitely recommend this unit.
