Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Garmin City Navigator North America for Detailed Maps of the United State, Canada and Mexico (DVD)Customer Review: Overall, I'm satisfied ... Summary: 5 Stars
I was hesitant to purchase this software given some of the negative reviews, but after owning/using it for about a week on my Colorado 300, I'm satisfied with its performance. I placed my order 4 January 2009. The version shipped by Amazon.com was the 2009 version - says so right on the packaging. The install process was neither complicated or draconian - I was NEVER prompted to enter any personal information to unlock the software, and had it installed and running in less than 15 minutes. The product code is no longer buried in the packaging - mine was on a bright green label attached to the dvd case.
I used it to plan a recent trip to northern Minnesota. I've never used any gps mapping software before, so it did take me some time to learn how to plan and use routes, waypoints, and points of interest efficiently. Since I'm a new user, I believe the learning curve was entirely appropriate and quite manageable. Like any software, it does not have human intuition. So, for instance, it will plot the shortest route by time or distance, without consideration for winter driving conditions or road construction. To that end, you'll still need to be able to read a map and make decisions on the fly. Still, I found it to be a useful navigational tool whose maps and POI's are 97% accurate in my experience.
Customer Review: A must have for your Garmin GPS unit Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this in conjunction with my 60csx after reading much about GPS maps here on Amazon. All I can say is that if you buy any Garmin GPS, then you HAVE TO have at least City Navigator (for roads and POI's etc...) to make it worth the purchase (the GPS unit, that is!). To me it is like buying an Ipod (no, I don't own an Ipod), NOT putting any music on it and then saying "wow, this is a great gadget... NOT" :).
The best part is actually using City Navigator on your computer (with MapSource) and uploading the customized maps into the unit. Very nice.
One other thing, I read SO MUCH in the reviews about the difficulty in activating the maps and all that... Let me just say that if you have that much trouble in the activation "process", you'll:
1. Find it impossible to load any kinds of maps.
2. Find it almost impossible to do much more than turn the unit on.
3. Probably be better off sticking to paper maps :)
Data in my version is very up to date and I couldn't be happier with it. To me, Garmin embarrasses themself by not having this as the unit's basemap. But then, how could they make another $80 on a $300 unit just like that :) Anyway, I'm pleased and that's all that matters.
Customer Review: Excellent Software Summary: 5 Stars
The software installed easily on my computer and I was able to unlock the maps with no problems. There was a Mapsource update available and it downloaded and installed without a hitch. An update is available for City Navigator North America NT. Due to the date of purchase I had for the full version, Garmin is sending the update DVD at no charge and is waiving the standard $75 update fee. This is the exact same thing Garmin did when an update was released shortly after I purchased the City Select v6 software and a v7 update was released shortly after. All of this was taken care of quickly and without any hassle.
The amount of time it took to download the maps to my GPS unit was much faster than the download time required when I was using the City Select v7 software. The City Select v7 software was non-NT and took up about 1.8 GB of space resulting in a download time of a little over 2.5 hours. The City Navigator North America NT maps are just under 1 GB and the download only lasted about 1.5 hours.
I am completely satisfied with City Navigator North America NT. The main areas where I travel have been updated and are much more current than my previous City Select v7 software.
Customer Review: Purchase for Map Software for Edge 705 Summary: 5 Stars
I was using an older Garmin Mapping software with the Edge 705 GPS/HRM for my bicycle. I have logged over 2000 miles this summer. Using the old software the navigation was terrible. GPS was indicating me on the road, but the routing software would indicate that would have to travel back to the road that I was already on.
When I upgraded the mapping software, all the navigation issues were resolved. Even when I deviate from my basic route, by taking a side street or extending my ride, the software recalculates quickly and informs me how to get back on the route by the next intersection, a very nice feature. When I ride outside my standard riding area, I can preplan routes on City Navigator software, upload it to the Edge 705 and use it when I get there.
Garmin, as usual, develops and refines its products over time. I am extremely happy with this product and find it much more flexible than the chip based maps that are also available, just for the ability to plan a route and then upload it.
Customer Review: Worth the price Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the GPSMap 60CSX for a variety of outdoor uses, mainly freshwater fishing. Inland Lakes was the first DVD that I purchased, and while that provides excellent lake details, it does not provide road details which may be useful while looking for unfamiliar or remote boat landings.
City Navigator provides the turn-by-turn information I needed. I can either send the information to the unit or simply print the driving directions. Let me assure you, online mapping programs may be free, but they lack the detail and accuracy of this software.
The unlock code is provided with the DVD and unlocking takes a matter of seconds. I highly recommend this DVD.
