I received my ACE 250 from my daughter for my birthday almost 4 years ago.
After studying the manual and tinkering around with the descrimination adjustments and practicing on my own coins to become accustomed to the different sounds I was ready to find that burried "pot of gold" in my back yard. Instead, I found quite a few 'wheat' pennies, a couple silver mercury dimes and a 1963 silver quarter in good condition. All within a couple hours.
I was estatic and soon could tell from the different sounds what was junk and what was treasure.
Setting the descrimination elimination modes helps eliminate the foil from the pull tabs. I leave the pull tab setting on because the nickel and the pull tab must have similiar characteristics as I find an auful lot of nickels.
I have a place in Myrtle Beach and hit the beach a couple times a year. I can't tell how many hundreds of coins of all demoninations including the dollar ones I have found. My best finds so far were a gold heart with diamonds, a silver heart necklas, a gold toe ring, a silver bracelet, a silver ring and a couple gold/diamond earrings.
Keep in mind these beaches are searched regularly by the locals who live there year round using all kinds of metal detectors. The pin pointing feature is right on as is the depth feature. If the detector beeps there IS some kind of treasure hidden beneath it. The coin demonination scale is pretty accurate except for nickle and pull tab.
If someone plans to search along the shoreline (The search coil is waterproof)
I suggest setting the "sensitivy" mode to a very low setting avoiding picking up the salt mineralization in the sand and deffinately get earphones for those weaker signals.
Just before winter (I live in NY) I searched for my final time at my in-laws 100 year old farm home, as I have done several times before. I uncovered a 1909 indian head penny and a 1900 silver quarter in fair condition about 6 inches down. A great way to end the fall hunting season.
I plan to buy Garrett's new 9" X 11" search coil to help me find the "ones that got away". Highly recommended....don't pass this one up!!

I wanted to write this review for the beginners of this hobby. Just like me you have probably compared lots of models with lots of different prices . You wonder if you spend to little will you be buying rubbish > I bought the Garret Ace 250 and it is superb for the Price . On my first outing I went beach hunting and found many old coins and other items .Of course if you spend $1000 or more you will get a better Metal detector but that holds true for anything you buy. This machine works easily and effectively .The DVD makes it easy to setup and understand straight from the get go.
As a tip to the new hobbyist buy yourself a good pin-pointer,this holds true for any metal detector you buy, it just makes life much easier. Don't be fooled about metal detecting Headphones being superior or necessary ,they're not .A normal pair of over the ear headphones has a higher dynamic range than what any metal detector can produce , its a metal detector not an mp3 player ,it has very simple audio output circuitry.
Buy the Garret ,go brave and enjoy.

Metal detecting seemed like something fun to do occasionally in my free time and on beach vacations, so I picked up the Ace 250 here (through electronica direct). After quite a bit of online research, this seemed to be to be the most reccommended "introductory" metal detector - a good compromise between price and features/performance. I mainly want to just have a fun time, and this has the minimum features to keep me from digging up a lot of garbage, which would quickly get frustrating.
I just received the item, and it came very quickly from electronica direct, who also gave a ups tracking number and quickly responded to an email I sent them. I really wanted the instructional dvd, which is an advertised bonus on many websites. However, the dvd is included in the box from the manufacturer, so of course it's included!
Once I start using it, I'll try to write a more performance-based review.

I first rented a Bounty Hunter Fast Tracker to find iron property stakes on my property. It found the easy ones (with some difficulty) that are close to the surface. Then I rented the Garrett Ace 250 because I could not find the last two. It found them, even though they were buried 5-6" below the surface. The last one was really difficult because there were underground cables and metal trash close by, so I used the Ace 250's discrimination and elimination features to match the detection profile of a property stake near the surface. Then I used the "Pinpoint" button to find the stake's exact location. Believe me, this last property stake was VERY hard to find, and I don't think I could've found it without using ALL of the Ace 250's features!Customer Review: Worked like a charm!
