Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Video Camcorder: 60-Minutes (White)Customer Review: Simple, convenient, and great for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
We were looking for a camcorder to record every day events. Since we are planning to travel extensively during the next year, we wanted something handy. We looked for many camcorders in the market. Camcorders that record on DVs or DVDs are difficult to carry because you need to also carry many spare DVDs etc. So we started looking for a Hard Drive based camcorder. However, most good products started at $300 and above. Some cheaper models require memory cards which are expensive.
During all this confusing search, we came across Flip camcorder on amazon. It is one of the most hot selling products and we now know why. Ours came yesterday and within a day we have made several videos and even hosted a few on you tube. It is the most convenient thing you can buy. Extremely easy to use and great for the price. A friend of mine paid 100 bucks for the software that goes with his $300 camcroder while we got both the camcorder and the software for little over 100 bucks!
Flip is not for serious photographers or people interested in high resolution recording. That said, when I hooked up Flip with our TV, the contrast was great and the resolution was fine. It performs much better that camcorders that are almost twice the cost.
Major strengths -
- great for the price,
- very easy to use,
- hooks up to pc, mac, tv,
- free software,
- uses AA batteries that last a long time,
- hard drive records upto 1 hour of video,
- instantaneous uploading on youtube etc.,
- easy to carry (very lightweight),
- craftsmanship is nice, I hear some of the other inexpensive camcorders are made from cheap plastic,
Two big gripes-
- doesn't have optical zoom. Digital zoom is never a good idea.
- you cannot change the resolution.
That said, its great for the money and all our videos have come out well.
Customer Review: Flip isn't just for Windos & Mac Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the 1 GB version of this camera. I'm pleased with it.
Its storage is Solid State! No tapes to jam, skip, or distort!
The worst disadvantage is that it doesn't have a tripod socket.
The frame size is small compared with 5 megapixel still cameras, but it's pretty good compared with VHS resolution.
You can copy movies to your computer, burn them on data disks, and later copy them back to the camera and hook it up to a TV.
If Linux, GNU, and free software are your bag, this camera attaches to your USB port and just looks like a flash disk drive to Linux.
Do not be put off by its lack of software for you.
The copy, drag, delete, and rename operations do just what you'd expect.(*)
I replaced Windows with MEPIS on a friend's discarded laptop, <500 MHz, 128 MB RAM, and successfully copied from the camera to it, and then saved the files to a 4 GB USB stick. The process would of course have been faster with a USB 2.0 port. But this supplies me with a highly portable five-hour movie storage capability!
Windows and Mac OS X users are supplied with editing software in the camera, but DVD production is not provided.
The .AVI files are a somewhat proprietary variant of MPEG-2. Various free software (GNU/Linux/X-Windows) distributions have editing software for this, and DVDAuthor is available to run on Linux and create playable DVD movies - as distinct from collections of data burned on DVD or CD, that you can play on your computer.
(*)The camera only recognises names with a certain pattern, so you might make some folders or movies invisible to it. You might even want to do so.
Customer Review: Coolest little video camera! Summary: 5 Stars
This little video camera is amazing! It's perfect for everyday use. I've had so much fun capturing family moments over the past month. It's so simple to use and I was totally blown away at the quality when I viewed the video on the computer and the television. Honestly, this is a "no-brainer" when it comes to using it. We are going to get one for all the members in the family for Christmas gifts because the cost is only a little over $100. And, it's so easy to use, even our 6 yr old has no problem using it! I would suggest getting the 60 minute camera instead of the 30 minute camera, though. It's handy to have a full hour of recording available. Uploading and sending video is a snap, too! If you are wanting to make a quality video of a particularly special moment like a wedding, then, I would use a high dollar video recorder. But, to capture fun memories of the kids and family, vacation moments, school functions, everyday life experiences, THIS is THE camera to get! With a larger, heavier camera, I'd end up not recording a lot of family events. With this small camera, I've almost become annoying to the family by recording so much! ha ha Also, it is so small that it fits in your purse or pocket. Plus the handy carrying strap assures you that you won't drop it! Additionally, I like to carry a couple of extra AA batteries along. Although the batteries seem to last I long time in the camera, it comes with a handy carrying bag that easily fits several extra batteries in the bottom so you're never without. Anyway, I can't say enough about this little camera. One of the best finds I've stumbled on to in a long time!
Customer Review: NerdBoyTV loves the Flip Video Camcorder Summary: 5 Stars
NerdBoyTV is a BIG fan of this little innovative video camcorder. When my 14-year-old was a baby and toddler, I lugged around a GIGANTIC Hi-8 (remember those) camcorder. I remember videotaping EVERY moment, yawn, and giggle and have about 15 two-hour tapes of her. Then came the three boys and I just lost the energy to pull the big, awkward camcorder out to film anything.
How I wish they had this little gadget back then...
But, I'm making up for lost time quickly. Now, at parties, restaurants, parks, events, or at home, I just click the Flip Video Camcorder on like a digital camera and start recording. The video AND audio are quite impressive considering the size of the unit.
What I like best is that the camera is as easy-to-use as a digital camera...just point and click. You'll find that you're more willing (and ready) to capture everyday events that you'll treasure for a lifetime.
...and isn't that the point of having a camcorder anyway?
PROS:
* Easy-to-use (most important) with a fairly intuitive user interface
* Small, compact, and quickly accessible
* Software built into the camera; just plug-and-play
* Can easily upload to YouTube.com
* Proof that even a kid can use it; my 6-year-old uses it all the time!
* Inexpensive and now comes is a variety of nifty colors
CONS:
* Buttons a little awkward for those of us with "stubby" fingers
* USB arm connector is difficult to attach to some computers
* Why even bother with a 30-minute version of this camera? Stick with the 60-minute!
Customer Review: Need info between 2 Flips.... Do you see differences I can't see? Summary: 5 Stars
Flip Video Camcorder: 60-Minutes (White), Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White), Can someone please enlighten me? I see 2 flip Video Camcorder 60 min. (White) posted here on Amazon, one for $119.99 holds 60 min. video on 1GB memory, model F160W. The other one is higher in price $ 149.54, it holds 60 min. of video also, but has 2 GB memory? It is called Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60 Min. (White), model F260W. Does anyone know what is the difference between these 2, other than the price and difference in GB memory, but both hold same amount of time video? Now I don't know much about computers, tech or electronics, but doesn't the memory determine how much does it hold? Why are these 2 different memory but hold same amount of video time? I would appreciate if I get an answer to this question since I would love to order this as soon as posible, but unsure which is best. Obviously would prefer to buy the cheaper one but is the other one better? I really don't see extra features for the second one. Would any of these work the same on my Apple OS X without having to get extra cables or software?, I need something easy to save videos of my babies and send them to grandparents in Mexico. Thanks, any info would be GREATLY appreciated......
