Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: so easy a cavegirl could do it Summary: 5 Stars
I am very low tech by nature, and despise reading the manuals that arrive with every piece of hardware, it actually keeps me from buying new things, just thinking about sitting down and going through the usual frustrations. I happened to run across the Flip video line while browsing and it appealed to me because of the easy downloading feature. Immediately downloads, no wire needed. No Way, really? really! I have a video feature on my digital camera (I under use that thing because again, short attention span users aren't going to read and remember all those functions), but often the video feature just doesn't start and the moment is lost. I know that likely in the age of iphones, etc, something that performs one function like the Flip video, might not appeal to some, but it's perfect for someone who just wants to pick up a tool and use it, it's so simple and has very few controls, you can't go wrong, yet the quality is fine for simple capturing of a cute or memorable sequence. Turn it on, take the movie, end it, erase it if needed, all so easy. Downloading is as promised, plug the thing itself, from a USB connection that pops out from the side, into a USB port and download. The Flip software was no problem to download either, it pops up when you plug in. I love it. It's light and portable too, everyone I show it to loves it.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! READ THE REVIEW!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a flip video camera last summer and was happy with the product for the first few months. A couple months ago the video camera would not turn on or recharge and I contacted their product support. Contact with them went on for a couple months and their only solution was to try resetting the video camera which didn't work.
I asked for the boss who after much prodding informed me that he is aware that there was a design flaw because he has had so many of the same complaints but his only solution was that there is no where to currently service the video camera in the US but check back in six months to see if a service center was open and see if they have a solution.
Their only concern was finding out that the product was older than the 90 day warrantee so they basically could say "sorry you bought a defective product, you got screwed, good luck".
I LOST 3 MONTHS OF MY KIDS VIDEOS THAT I WILL NEVER RECOVER.
The video camera should state that is is disposable video and that after a few months you will probably have to throw it away.
This attitude worked before the internet but I will do whatever I can to make sure everyone is aware of poor product and even worse product support.
Buy someone else's video Review: Great HD camera, great price Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fabulous little HD video camera. It is small, easy to use, and produces great video. You can also make photos from the footage you shoot using the FlipShare software, which comes with the camera. It is easy to download footage to your computer with the software. You can even create "films" using the very basic editing program in the software. The program works with both Macs and PCs.
I have also edited Flip footage from my Utra HD with Mac's Final Cut Pro.
I recommend buying an extra battery if you plan to use the Flip for extended shoots, as it takes at least three hours to fully charge the battery. I would also recommend buying the accessory USB cables, as otherwise you use the small USB arm that extends from the camera, which can lead to some precarious positioning of your Flip while charging or sharing materials between camera and computer.
Be aware that the mic picks up wind noise outdoors quite easily. That brings me to the two accessories I wish Flip would come up with: (1) a windscreen for use with the Flip that would screen out some of that wind noise, and (2) a nice little case that would fit the Flip, an extra battery, and a USB cable.
If you're thinking about this for the holidays, do it! You will love it.
Customer Review: Not perfect, but for the $, and for my purposes, it's fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, image stabilization, expandable memory, a thinner profile, and snapshot ability would be nice. That being said, I live overseas and in the past year have found myself in a couple different incidents where it would have been VERY helpful to have been able to record someone vandalizing my property and threatening me. Being a foreigner, the police then totally dismissed my side of the story.
Finding something with the ability to record high-quality audio and video without fumbling around a microscopic control interface, has since been a mission of mine and I finally found it with the UltraHD. For my purposes, the UltraHD is vastly superior to any other video recording device on the market because the design of it makes it easy to either a) disguise the fact that you're recording video (Easy to turn off the record light in the set-up menu and use the camera inconspicuously-harder with a traditionally designed video camera), or b) Make it obvious you're recording (by the way you hold it, plus using the record light).
Depending on the situation, either one could be useful and combined with the remarkably simple operation of the camera and quick start-up, this is clearly the camera I've been looking for and I won't ever leave the house without it.
Customer Review: I love my flip! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my flip camera a couple months ago. I picked this one over the mino because I liked the fact that i could use regular batteries if the rechargeable one died.
I have an JAV everio that i bought in 2006. I only used it a hand full of times because i was not very happy with the quality of the videos. I was disappointed because the camera was kind of expensive and left a lot to be desired.
Because of my bad experience with the everio i wasnt sure if i should get a camera with a build in hd. I spent months reading reviews and listening to people talk about how much they loved their flip before i finally decided to buy one of my own. I figured it was less than $200 i wouldnt be out much money if i didnt like it.
The first day i used it i fell in love. I tried it in low light and the picture quality was still pretty amazing. I bought a tripod to use with it to make the video even more clear. I would upload the videos to facebook and friends would all comment on the quality of the video and said they too wanted to buy a flip.
Now my husband is deployed and i can upload videos for him to watch and he loves being able to see our kids everyday.
This has probably been the best $150 i have ever spent!
