Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Ultra HD, ultra convenient
Summary: 5 Stars

The ultra HD is exactly what it is supposed to be: a hassle-free camcorder for when you don't want to lug around a big one. You will notice right away that it doesn't have image stabilization, so if you don't know how to hold a camera steady, you may be in trouble. That said, the ease of use is wonderful. A child could operate this. Push the side button, and it's on; push the red button and you're recording. Clear, crisp video (2hrs worth) and the software loads on to your computer as soon as you plug it into the usb.

The software is as easy to use as the camera, and you can upload movies to the internet, make music videos, take stills from your video, and prep video for use with a third-party dvd creater. The only trouble I had with the software was when making a music video. Fortunately, the people at Flip were very helpful and sent me a patch for it. I was very satisfied.

Another thing I like is that it uses two AA batteries (6hrs of life) and comes with a battery pack (2hrs or so) that recharges when plugged into the computer. If you want to pay more, you can get the Flip mino hd, which is a little smaller and comes with a built-in lithium ion battery.

The only thing to think about when buying an HD is that it WILL NOT PLAY ON A STANDARD DEF TV directly from the camera, although you can still upload high def vids to the computer. No worries, though. Just make a dvd.

There is $1500 HD and $200 HD; for $200, I think this is very good HD.

Customer Review: Look no further
Summary: 5 Stars

We recently decided impulsively to go to the beach and since our three kids are are all very young, their antics are very precious: OK, well at least to us! I wanted to take a video camera with us without having to go to MIT to operate it, and bought this camera after reading a few reviews. It arrived the next day and had to take it without trying it out first, to the beach. After arriving at our destination, I realized that our regular camera's battery was not charged, and with the charger at home, we were dependent on this camera.
After inserting the batteries and briefly screening the instruction manual, we were off to the beach. Being an amateur, I follow three rules when it comes to photography: keep the horizon horizontal, keep the camera still when recording, and if you want a close up view, move your butt closer to the object!
The camera is very easy to operate, the screen is visible even in bright sunlight and the downloaded videos are spectacular. Colors are beautiful, and since we returned we have not stopped looking at the videos.
To download it to my iPad, I had to go to the Flip website to get some information, and my precious videos are now uploaded to my Movies library on iTunes.
This is a great video camera and the online sharing of videos makes an already great package even greater. One of the few electronics purchases I made this year that will remain my favorite for a long time!

Customer Review: Flip UltraHD
Summary: 5 Stars

I did a bit of online research between the UltraHD, MinoHD, Creative Pro, Kodak, Sony, and similar pocket camcorders but opted for the Flip for:

- Image quality
- Idiotproof controls and interfaces
- Built-in software which is very easy to use
- Removable/replaceable rechargeable batteries via computer USB cable; can also use regular inexpensive AA batteries which is nice when on the road and eliminates the need to buy an extra set of the expensive Flip rechargeable battery

I initially bought the regular Ultra and liked it but wanted better image quality so I returned it and got the UltraHD.

Image on the UltraHD is much much better with the HD resolution plus the widescreen format allow one to get more in the shot.

Use of a tripod/monopod to stabilize the video is a must.

We use a Vidpro Gripster for DSLR which is identical to the Joby Gorillapod but at 1/4 the price ($10 vs. $40)! Got it here at amazon.

The unit DOES NOT come with a miniHDMI-to-HDMI cable to connect to an HDTV with an HDMI port. Flip sells it separately for about $20. I bought mine for under $2 here at amazon.

The only thing I would have like it to have is a greater field of view (FOV) like the Creative Pro. You get more in the picture, i.e., zoomed out more.

Other than that, I give it two thumbs up.

Customer Review: awesome portable camcorder
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this camcorder! Its very portable and super easy to work. Just click the power button, and in about two seconds you're ready to record! The size is perfect for carrying around in a jacket pocket or a purse (my jeans are way too snug for it to fit in my pants). The screen is just the right size and the microphone picks up noises pretty well. I've also found that it adjusts fairly well in low-lit settings, although filming during the day is generally best (picture-wise). The only downsize is the battery pack that comes with the camera. Mine kept overheating when I plugged it in to charge, which would stop the charge - it was a pain. So I went out and bought some AA rechargeable batteries (I highly recommend the Sanyo Eneloop 4 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargable Batteries w/ Charger) and my problems were solved! Now I just carry an extra set with me in case my battery life gets too low, and I don't have any problems. Overall, if you're looking for a good quality, highly portable camcorder, this one is definitely it. On a side note, if you are trying to choose between this model and the Mino HD, just remember that the Mino does not have a removable battery pack, which means that unlike the Ultra HD, if your battery dies while you are out and away from your charger, you are totally hosed.

Customer Review: Easy and Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I used the Flip UltrHD Camcorder first to film events at my niece's 2nd Bday party. I loved the ability to take short clips with just the push of a button. Later, after having installed the software on my PC, I was able to view the clips, delete the ones I didn't want, and turn all the small clips into one movie. Very easy to use, so would not hesitate to recommend it for non-technical friends and relatives.

The beauty of the Flip might also be a limitation for some...there are not many settings to choose from. But for web, family clips, documentation, just about everything, the current settings seem to work fine.

The installation software resides on the Flip, and I've been able to download it so far on 3 different computers. So, anywhere I visit without my laptop, I can install the software on someone else's computer and download the videos and start viewing, editing, emailing, and uploading them. Because there is the option to keep videos on the camera even after downloading to a computer, I would do this and so have all the videos with me still on the flip after I returned home.

You will (for convenience) want to have a USB-extension cable. Othewise, depending on the design of the computer's USB port, you will be holding the flip in place with you hand for long periods of time (when making a movie, this could take several minutes).
