Prior to owining the Flip MinoHD, if you were to ask me to name a camcorder brand, I would have immediately said Canon or Sony. If you were to ask me to describe a typical camcorder, I would have said: About the size of a Nerf Football, many buttons/settings, swivel LCD screen, big lens at the front and designed to be held as if you're about to chug a beer!
Well, let me tell you, the Flip MinoHD is the complete opposite of what I just described, If fits in your hand just like a Blackberry Pearl, LG Chocolate or two packs of Trident Gum, it has a total of 6 touch sensitive buttons (below the 2 inch screen) which serve different purposes depending on which menu you're in, a physical red RECORD button located right at the center, a POWER button on the right side of the unit and a USB EJECT switch on the other. The lens is the same size of most standard cell phones but it offers much better quality, it really packs a punch! Also around the same lines, you hold this camcorder as you would an iPhone or a DROID on camera mode.
This is a great camcorder in so many ways, easy to carry, you don't need to bring extra cases, pouches or bags to the them park any more, just slide it in the included sleeve, put it in your pant pocket and you're ready to go. It only takes about 2 seconds tops to boot up and it's already set to record, just point and shoot, that's all you have to do, if you want to watch previosly recorded videos, just press the left or right touch sensitive buttons and you're already browsing through your library.
Want to watch your videos on a bigger screen? Slide the EJECT switch to reveal the built in USB and plug it directly into your computer, it comes with the FlipShare software in it's internal memory so all you do is open the Flip folder, install the software and watch your recorded videos on your computer monitor.. Still not big enough? Buy yourself a "Mini HDMI to HDMI cable" (they sell for about $7 on Amazon) to watch your videos directly on your HDTV!
Note: You don't need to install the FlipShare software to watch the videos on your computer, just open the DCIM --> 100VIDEO folder to load directly from the camcorder.
Overall quality is great... I gave the camera to my 7 and 9 year old boys to play with since that's the best test you can give any electronic device for durability, if it still comes back in one piece, you have a winner there! They came back not only with the camera intact, but with the funniest videos I've seen in a long time, some of which they shot at night trying to make a zombie movie, even though it wasn't a perfect picture at night it was still decent enough for me to enjoy the actual video and not concentrate on the mild static. Videos shot during the day look crisp and clear, I was really surprised that this small camcorder can deliver such great picture quality. Sound is also one thing this camera shines on, sounds good even when playing it back on the small built in speakers.
They didn't have a problem browsing through menus although they first thought it was a touch screen so they kept on pressing on it, once they realized that there's a thing we old people call buttons, they got used to them and were using the camcorder like pros!
I recommend the Flip MinoHD to anyone who is tired of carrying extra batteries, tapes and carrying bags only to end up recording 30 minutes of you and your kids at the park. To anyone who, like me, has kids that love making and acting their own movies, this is such a great product to keep your kids active playing in the backyard using their imagination.
Note: I used the Flip MinoHD and included sofware on a windows 7 computer
Tip: Like I said before, you can buy a "mini HDMI to HDMI cable" to get the most out of your camcorder.
Tip: You can buy an "AC to USB Power adapter" to charge the unit on a wall outlet, or a "car charger to USB" to charge it in your car, I used the ones that came with my cell phone and didn't have a problem.
Tip: Keep the camcorder in the included sleeve when not in use, the surface looks and feels like it's easy to scratch.
Tip: Make sure to install the handstrap before you start playing with it, It will make a difference if you accidentaly drop it.
Tip: Never ever rub your eyes after eating Flamin' Hot Cheetos... But that's a totally different subject!
