Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip MinoHD Video Camera - Black, 4 GB, 1 Hour (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Mac Users MUST read this! Summary: 5 Stars
The FLIP Mino HD has just become THE best miniature camcorder out there for MAC users. Why, you ask? Because Apple has just released Ilife 2009 (which contains IMovie 2009).
This new release contains an image stabilization program to stabilize camcorder clips.
One simply creates a movie using clips shot by the FLIP (or any other similar device), then stitches the clips together (without titles, as they can appear unstable). After the clips are stitched together, simply export the created movie to a place on your computer (I export to the desktop).
Then, open IMovie and import the saved clip. After importing the clip into IMovie, simply open File/Analyze for Stabilization, and the program stabilizes your new movie. Double click on the movie and a dialog box opens, allowing you to cut down the degree of stabilization, if you desire. Then move the entire movie into your project, add titles, transitions, etc. to your desire, and Voila....a fabulous movie comparable to what you get from a $600 Camcorder...and you still have the portability of your FLIP.
If you have any further questions, I shall be happy to hear from you and respond to you. <eppi39@comcast.net> Believe me, after playing with this thing for an hour or so, you will become an expert in creating great movies with your Mino HD.
Customer Review: An Amazing Intuitive & Fun Device Summary: 5 Stars
We just had our first child and my wife repeatedly asked for a video camera for Christmas. Myself, being a very avid photographer (still camera) was not so interested in purchasing a 2nd video camera that neither my wife or I would want to carry around...nor really ever had an interest in going back to watch videos on tape, casssette, etc. As a test compromise I suggested we try the Mino HD as easy to use, fits in purse/pocket and really did 95% of what want to do, which is capture special moments of baby & family.
On Christmas Eve the UPS box arrived with the new Mino (paid $199). Opened the box and with 3 minutes we were recording videos. The user interface of controls, TV hookup and instant software load with USB is brilliant...I would say better than Ipod in fact. 4 hours after we owned the device we sent video Xmas cards to relatives, had videos of the baby with Great Grandma, etc. On image quality, will you be making an Indi flick with this device?...No, but for viewing on TV/Computer the quality of the video is great. Also, software has ability to capture stills of the video and save to your personal folders, email, etc.
If have any hesitation about buying a mino don't. And if fretting between the HD and non-HD version...spend the extra $50 for the HD. I compare
Customer Review: Great HD Camcorder! Summary: 5 Stars
I loved my previous Flip so much, I could not resist the impulse to buy it in HD.
This camcorder could not be any easier to use. The personalization options make this thing even cooler!
The HD Mino is light, making it easy to carry around to capture important moments. As opposed to my other camcorder, I find myself actually using the Flip.
All you have to do it flip out the USB, plug it in (works great with Mac) and you can edit away with nifty software contained on the device itself. The software is much better than the previous generation; easy to use, lots of cool features.
The battery life is decent. I find that I plug in the Flip frequently enough to download footage that it's rarely low on batteries.
The footage looks great, even in somewhat low light, although night filming was a little more problematic. I found the sound quality crisp. Distortion caused by breezes was surprisingly minimal. You will not find better video quality for the money. The autofocus works fantastically.
My only complaint is that the screen is on the small side. I'd prefer to be able to see the benefits of the higher resolution on the device itself.
A perfect present for the holidays in my opinion.
Customer Review: Excellent Simple HD Digital Video Recorder Summary: 5 Stars
The Product Description accurately describes this HD recorder. So, let me provide my observations based on being an old geezer (60s) who has some experience with digital cameras (stand alone and on cell phones) but none with digital recorders.
It's simple to use. Of course, being simple to use has advantages and disadvanatges. It's not terribly adjustable because it has so few buttons. But I used it (for the first time) last week to video my daughter competing in a weekend equestrian event. Although the image displayed on the small screen didn't show very much action, when I got home and downloaded the recordings to my computer (quite an easy thing to do), I was amazed at the high quality of the recordings and the fact that my subject was pretty well centered, the picture not shaky at all, and the action well covered.
So, while it's not terribly flexible, it's great for what it is -- a simple-to-use high quality digital recording device.
Not only did I take videos of my daughter but I passed another threshold by posting the videos a few hours later to You Tube so that my friends and family could enjoy my daughter's competition.
I highly recommend this little recorder for older people like me.
Customer Review: The first camcorder I actually use! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a photographer, using high-end DSLRs which don't include video capabilities (unless it's the Nikon D90). So when I heard about this product, something I could easily stow on my hip, I had to have it! Not only is it easy to use, the video files are easy to transfer and store on your computer.
I don't have much experience with HD-Cameras, but this rivals my two year old Sony Handycam MiniDV. And since capturing the video from the camera was so difficult, I never bothered.
There are two drawback. One is the lack of zoom, digital zoom degrades the video quality so you should never use it!. The other problem is the lack of motion stabilization, meaning the camera is very poor for walking about, every jiggle is amplified. The other problem might be the tiny LCD screen, especially in bright light, but this is more of a competitor issue than a real functional issue for me. I see other camcorders with larger screens, but this is a much smaller and lighter package.
That considered, this is still an enabling technology. Meaning that despite it's drawbacks, the form factor and ease of use make it a technology you will actually use regularly. I'd say it's a bargain!
