Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fellowes P-57Cs, 8 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder 3205701Customer Review: Perfect Home Shredder, Just Did Spring Cleaning, and Flawless Summary: 5 Stars
I bought 2 of these (1 for myself, and 1 for my mom to shred all junk mail with my personal info on it. I've had it for about 2 months now.
Every time i get a junk letter i just stick it into the shredder. Shreds no problem, so i figured i kick it up a bit with more intense testing. My grandfather wanted to shred 30+ years of papers with his personal information, so i let him. He shredded about a hundred or so papers of personal info in about 2-3 days with not to much shredding each day. So it passed that test, now comes the big one. This past saturday i decided it was time for spring cleaning. My room was a complete mess with papers all over the place (now it's spotless). It was time to shred all my papers with my personal info with this shredder (which is the reason why i bought it in the first place). I collected about 100 or so papers and shredded them all with normal pauses to allow the shredder to cool down. I only did about 5 real shred sessions of 5 minutes each, and the unit worked flawlessly. Of course you have to lubricate every so often to keep it running in perfect condition. To make this shredder feel more flawless i had just one instance where i stuck a letter that was real thick with a credit card inside, and the shredder was having a hard time shredding it, so hard that infact the shredder froze and there was no way to make it work. I tried reverse, forward, reverse, forward, etc... and nothing, i tried using a knife and removing as much paper as i could and nothing. then i thought maybe it had just overheated so i should wait for it to cool down. I then decided to put more lubrication to perhaps unjam it, then i pressed reverse and it finally unjammed and still works flawlessly. This machine can take all kinds of abuse as long as u lubricate it regularly and not over abuse it. for a typical spring cleaning it should do it's job perfectly just try to not stick too many thick letters unopen into it as you'll need to lubricate it more often and risk getting it jammed. 1-3 papers at a time is perfect, just don't stick more than that everytime, just occasionally. Also this shredder is only worth it at it's low normal price. It's current highly overprice tag is a total rip off. Do not buy it at this high price tag.
Customer Review: Sturdy and powerful shredder Summary: 5 Stars
I looked around quite a bit for a good cross-cut shredder but didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on one b/c this is for mild home use. this appeared to have good ratings and made from a quality company.
had it for a month now and love it. you can tell is has a quality, strong motor and the shredder components are thick and metal and appear to be very durable.
it has a built-in shutoff device if your fingers get to close to the input. i.e. if you get a shirt sleeve caught in, once your hands nears the entry, it'll shut off. however, i'd be very surprised if this were to ever actually happen.
it snaps onto the wastebasket and swivels up and down which is somewhat handy. When emptying, i just take it off the basket.
i use it mainly for shredding junk mail. so probably 2-3/day. i.e. not heavily used.
it appears to have absolutely no problems with staples. i don't put many through but the few i have, the shredder moves along as if they weren't even there. you actually can't even tell it processed them. no sound, slowage, anything. i've not tried credit cards but i'm sure it'd plow right through them.
regarding the number of sheets,
1-2 is as if there is nothing there
3-6 is a very mild slow down but destroys them all with easy
7-8 is when you see a very noticeable difference. actually, i never did 7, just went str8 to 8 and it seemed to have a tough time.
going forward, i'll probably limit to just 5-6 max to prevent any unnecessary strain on the motor.
i can't really compare this to a similar shredder b/c the last kind i had was a generic strip shredder that you put over top of a trashcan. it did the job for about 5 years and one day i put a credit card in there and it seemed to damage the motor a bit and never was the same since. it did the job on paper (3 at a time) but frequently jammed and was overall just a real pain in the arse.
overall, this shredder seems very sturdy and powerful. i highly recommend. $50 for this is a great deal. and i'll never go back to strip shredding if i can help it. cross-cut is by far superior.
Customer Review: Medium duty it is Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this shredder because I was moving, so I had to get rid of a bunch of papers. I liked the fact that it shreds paperclips and credit cards. It made it easy for me to shred papers w/o having to take the additional step to remove the paperclips. In the month that I've been using it, I had one "problem". I was feeding a couple of papers and they got stuck. Easy solution: shred forward, shred reverse, repeat. I found that the reason it got stuck was because there were too many shredded pieces piling up in the bin, so it didn't leave any room for the new pieces to be shredded. I found the best thing to do to prevent this was to push the shredded pieces down occasionally. The only downside to this shredder is that there is no window for you to see how full the bin is getting. Hence, you have to periodically check and periodically push your pieces down, which was the least of my worries with this shredder. I believe the instructions that came with it said you should use the shredder for 10-15 minutes at a time or something like that. I definitely went beyond the recommended time limit and didn't have any problems. In terms of noise level, it's not the quietest thing nor the loudest. If you're shredding and your roommate is trying to talk to you (like mine was), then you just have to raise your voice a bit to have a conversation. In terms of the number of sheets to shred, I believe the description says it can shred 8 sheets. It can do 8, but it's going to be a slow process. I shred 6 at one time and it struggled a little bit to shred and it took a little bit longer than shredding 2 sheets. I wouldn't shred a lot of sheets at one time with this shredder, but if you're doing that, then you probably need a heavy duty shredder for the job.
Customer Review: Good for shredding letters from judgemental sisters and family. Summary: 5 Stars
For the money, you can hardly beat this one. I use it to shred all those literally hundreds of credit card shill letters I receive. But most importantly, I use it to shred correspondence from my family, especially my anal-retentive sister who is constantly writing me telling me I am doomed to spend eternity in hell if I do not change my ways. I use to go into a complete rage when receiving these letters and was receiving many paper cuts from ripping them, the letters, to shreds. With this handy little inexpensive gadget, I get great satisfaction if watching the hateful words being reduced to little thin strips of nothing.
I also receive letters from overly aggressive friends I have spent brief evenings or weekends with and which do not know how to let go and do not understand the concept of "ships passing in the night." Some of these letters would mortify me if I died and I knew my prudish sister read them; which she would and would delight in sharing them with the rest of the family.
This machine is quite, efficient and attractive, if any machine can truly be called attractive. I have had no problems with it. The cost was certainly reasonable. I only shred one page at a time as I get a kick out of it for some reason and I try to make the moment last, especially with those horrid letters from my sister.
I very much recommend this product and I hope you have a nicer sister than I and have no need for this machine.
P.S. If you get really, really angry and try to stuff all ten pages of a letter in at once, the machine dose go clunky on you sometimes.
Customer Review: Affordable alternative Summary: 5 Stars
This is an affordable alternative to the more powerful models. Its black with a silver paper insert. Its approxmately 16 inches high, 12 inches deep and 15 inches wide. The switch is located on top of the unit.Move the switch left to turn it on or right for reverse with the middle being off. It has two rows of steel blades with each row consisting of 27 teeth.
The price point was my reason for purchase so I really wasn't expecting much and while this little guy is great at shredding a couple of sheets at a time he really struggles with more than that. He will shred the paper into confetti as advertised so theres no problem with someone stealing personal information.
Make sure to buy the lubricating oil, it comes in really nice when his blades get jammed. Apply the oil along the width of the paper insert then switch him to reverse until the jam clears.
I would've preferred a clear basket so I could easily tell when to empty the paper shreds but basically you have to peek inside by lifting the top and tilting it. The shredded confetti tends to fall in a continous pile that builds up like a mountain peak if you can imagine that on a much smaller scale, the peak eventually reaches the bottom of the shredder blades before filling the basket so I recommend shaking the paper basket a few good times to level off that peak.
I recommend this shredder for light to moderate work but not for anything to tough.
Yes, I had to much free time on my hands while writing this to actually count all the teeth in this shredder for you.
