Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005)Customer Review: ScanSnap S1300 - Excellent ! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been a die-hard Visoneer PaperPort user for years (XP 100, XP 200 and XP 220 with PaperPort 12 software). After using the ScanSnap for a total 8 hours over three days, I will never go back to a Visioneer device with PaperPort software. For about the same price I'm getting much more capability. I use this product to scan bills, critical documents (birth certificates, warranties, etc.) and manuals for records retention at home.
Here are my reasons (the really good):
- Scan speed for equivalent resolutions is much faster (B&W, Greyscale, etc.)than the Visioneer.
- Unit turns off when lid is closed. Also protects scanner when not in use.
- Unit scans at the push of a button.
- Unit scans back to front simultanously and will do 10 pages at a time (got 16 to work a few times). Did 16 pages in about two minutes. Would have taken me forever with the XP 220 scanning one page side at a time.
- Unit adjusts for size and skew automatically. Can scan differing document sizes at the same time. This has been a bug for me lately in the PaperPort software that comes with the XP 220, so I had to manually crop and adjust for skew and size.
- Scan to Excel worked better than I expected. Haven't done PowerPoint or Word yet. On a few occasions, with PaperPort on the XP 220, I've had to use OmniPage for the OCR.
- Its tricky to setup the Visioner starting with the intial calibration and then the setup of default actions, default scanning folders and the creation of multiple scanning profiles for different resolutions and paper sizes. This was much easier with the Fujitsu software.
- One stop shop for hardware and software (Fujitsu). For the Visioneer scanner and On-Touch drive you had to call Visioneer. For PaperPort you have to contact Nuance Software. They can be hard to get support for at times. I have not tried Fujitsu support yet, but like the idea of a single entity to contact.
Some minor annoyances, but not even close enough to change my mind:
- Can't un-stack documents in included SnapScan Organizer software. With PaperPort I had an unstack feature. Maybe its available and I can't find it.
- A bit of a delay, when I move the newly scanned document from the ScanSnap folder to a file cabinet where I keep partticular documents.
- Don't like the document view (Large, Medium, Small) in ScanSnap Manager. The visual in PaperPort was a bit cleaner.
- Doesn't use a TWAIN driver (but a proprietary Fujitsu driver) so you have to scan to PDF and then attach files when using eFax or other similar products.
- The cost of cleaning kits and rollers is higher for annual maintenance, but I'm OK with that.
Thanks to Fujitsu for the device and software and others who have left feedback (for my research prior to purchase) on this product at Amazon.com.
