I travel a lot and I've tried several types of over the ear and cup style noise cancelling headphones. With all of them I've had to really crank the volume on my iPod, and most of them are too bulky. The Bose in particular take up a huge amount of space in my carry on. I was a little concerned about whether I could wear an in-the-ear device and be comfortable so I went to Walgreens first and bought a variety of earplugs. I tried these out for different periods of time, including a brief flight. I found that it took a little time for me to get used to the sensation, but that ultimately I really preferred noise elimination to noise cancelling. Then I ordered the Etymotic earphones.
I've used them on 4 flights now and absolutely love them. True, they don't have the bass response of a high end cup-style headphone, but they really cut the noise out and the bass is quite smooth. I can have the iPod's volume at a reasonable level. I hear a nice level of bass (I listen to a variety of music including dance, classical, rock, country, trance...). Plus, because it's now so quiet, I can sleep better on the plane or concentrate on reading or working if I need to. I've had them in for about 4 hours at a time so far without any discomfort. I even use them for meditation at home or on the plane and it's a wonderful experience.
Like everyone else has said, it pays to spend whatever time you need to to get a good fit.
Customer Review: High Sound Quality, Highly Effective in Isolating Noise

This is the most effective earphone in isolating noise that I have owned, better than the Sony Fantophia that I also own and some other expensive isolating earphones that I have tried.
Personally I use the foam inserts (that came with the earphone) rather than the rubber version, as they feel more comfortable as well as more effective isolating noise. I have been wearing them whole day long without ever feeling discomfort. Most sports gun shooters (I am one of them) will notice that the foam is essentially the same as that used for ear protection in shooting, proven to be highly effective in isolating noise.
Also, the sound quality is so high that it may disturb some people, as it exposes many flaws (both musical flaws and artifacts due to the MP3 format) that are otherwise unnoitced. For example, for the first time that I have noticed that there are actually so many flaws, that some instruments are either slightly out of synch or slightly out of tune in some of my favorite orchestra music. It does this by producing may layers of sounds, instead of heavy and dull bass that overwhelms everything else. I suspect this is the reason for the highly polarized reviews out there. While most people rate it very high, some rate it as totally worthless, with almost nothing in-between. Some people are just not used to hearing flaws in music, and they think it must be the flaws of the earphone.

These headphones are GREAT, and contrary to popular opinion they really do last (if you aren't pulling hard on the cords regularly, which you shouldn't do anyway). I have used mine 6+ hours a day for the last year and they are still in great condition.
The fit is very comfortable as the initial package includes multiple ear-flanges of different sizes. You can also order extra flanges from Etymotic on the cheap if you lose one of them ($14 for 10 replacements, I think).
The noise-canceling is amazing as well. I flew to see family over the holidays and ended up sitting next to a screaming toddler (next seat over, across the aisle). With these in, I couldn't hear the ruckus AT ALL and while everyone in my section of the plane looked like they were about to pull their hair out, I was fine. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THESE FOR BUSINESS TRAVELERS.
...And most importantly, the sound is AMAZING!
Music comes alive. If you have been listening to music through other headphones, you'll be amazed when you slip these in. I'd never heard the little nuances in "Explosions in the Sky" until I put these in. It really did floor me.
Long and the short of it is: If you take care of your electronics, want noise canceling in a portable package, and want to hear nuances of the music you are listening to, these are great headphones.
Customer Review: Etymotics ER 6i - Great Choice!

This is the second pair of Etymotics ER6i's that I have purchased. The first pair was for me. I bought them about 5 years ago for several different uses - business travel, jogging and motorcycling. I still travel with them; I still jog with them; I crashed my motorcycle; but the ER6i's continue to deliver outstanding sound and a comfortable, private listening experience. I bought the second pair for my son for Christmas this year to get him off of the Apple earbuds before he destroys his hearing. Some of the best benefits of these in-ear plugs are: their comfort (with multiple options for in-ear cushioning; the sound! (You WILL hear sounds you rarely hear with most earbuds or when listening to a CD); and you can hear this your music much clearer at about half the volume you might normally listen to on other buds. Mine are still going strong and I'll buy another pair when these finally wear out. My brother bought the top of the line model from Etymotics and he is equally happy with his purchase. Etymotics has one issue they have to fix - making replacement filters available! It is darn near impossible to find a supplier to buy replacement filters. I finally went straight to Etymotics and a very kind customer service person said she would send me some for free...and she did! I highly recommend these. The best feature of these is how well they seal out ambient noise.
When you first use them the sensation of having something all the way inside your ear is different and somewhat unpleasant, however after a time or two you get completely used to it and then it actually feels better than the usual earphones because they're quite comfortable. It's just a new sensation that takes some time for adjustment.
I really like using them in the gym to help cut down background noise. I also like them on planes.
I have some Bose noise canceling headphones that I use when flying and have found that you can combine both these Etymotics and the Bose headphones by using the Etymotics for the MP3 sound then put the Bose noise canceling on over your ears to reduce the jet engine noise. It's a very effective combination and comfortable.
The cables are very small, light and flexible which is great for wearing but after about a year and a half my first pair developed an electrical short in the wires and became unusable. I attribute this to the wires being so small and delicate - so this is a shortcoming in the design.
I immediately purchased another pair and will try and be more careful in how I handle them so I don't put any stress on the wires.
