Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs (Baby Blue with Clear Stem)Customer Review: Easy to use, work very well Summary: 5 Stars
I play a brand of ocarina that's pretty loud. I have Meniere's syndrome, which makes my affected ear more sensitive to noise injury and I found that after practicing my ocarina a lot I was getting ringing in my affected ear. These earplugs are far easier to use than foam earplugs and reasonably comfortable. I find that if I leave them in for a couple of hours, my ear canals start to ache a bit, but the aching goes away quickly once I remove the earplugs. Since using the earplugs, the ringing in my Meniere's-affected ear has been less of a problem. Of course, the ocarina doesn't sound the same with the earplugs in; if I really need to know how my playing sounds, I'll listen for a short time with my "good" ear unplugged and after that I find it's very easy to detect errors, even with both ears plugged.
BTW, Amazon says there's a "newer (more expensive) model" of this earplug. As far as I can tell from internet research, the only difference between the old and new models is the change in names of the sizes of earplugs. The "small" size (blue earplugs) is now called "standard."
Customer Review: Etymotic Research ER20 Baby Blue Ear Plugs with Clear Stem Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Baby Blue ear plugs with clear stem for use during classical piano practice in order to reduce prolonged exposure to the intensity of a grand piano's sound during long practice sessions, which otherwise aggravates my tinnitus (ringing in the ears). I am absolutely delighted with the purchase. The Baby Blues definitely reduce intensity to a significant degree without distorting or seriously thinning the sound, and I now use them regularly and wouldn't want to be without them. I also found the small size a perfect fit (I am male, 5'9", 167 pounds, with a more or less ordinary sized head). I should note that, after prolonged use, switching back to "full sound" without the plugs can be a shock: the natural sound is overwhelming by contrast and requires some time for adjustment. But I would highly recommend the Baby Blues to anyone with similar needs and interests. And a further nice feature: they come in a small, easy-to-use snap-close plastic container that includes a cord for connecting the plugs to each other for safe keeping.
Customer Review: finally, earplugs that fit! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a wedding photographer and I need to be able to hear people call my name out whenever I'm working. Additionally, I really care about my hearing and I don't want to lose it. Normal earplugs block all noise, which isn't helpful when a bride is calling for you and you can't hear her. Enter Etymotic.
These things really do lower the overall noise without muffling it - what this means is that I'll hear the bride, the conversation next to me, all the little things I'd miss with 99 cent earplugs in the store. And for music, these really are a no brainer as you can enjoy the music at concerts and protect your hearing since the sound is still true - just softer. Bonus, if the music is cracking, these earplugs filter out that high pitched crack.
I had been using their regular model in small however they never really fit my ear canal right - they'd pop out because I couldn't get them to fit in all the way. With the baby blues I now have earplugs that really fit into my ears and I couldn't be happier.
Customer Review: Sound protection / low cost musicians ear Summary: 5 Stars
These are the smaller size version of the hearing protection plugs. These hearing protection plugs are marketed as offering 20 dB sound reduction at all frequencies. I tested them with measurement grade microphones on a HATS (Head and Torso Simulator - artificial head) and found they meet or exceed this specification overall. Most hearing protection devices attenuate the higher frequencies more than the lower frequencies making speech and other sounds muffled. These offer fairly equal broadband attenuation which is more like simply turning the volume down rather than turning down the "treble" settings on a stereo. I was considering a "musicians" ear which is a custom set of earplugs with filter to attenuate broadband sound, but cost much more. The only disadvantage is that they stick out somewhat from the ear. Come with a nice case and string to keep them together as a pair.
Customer Review: Great Product--The earplugs for those that have always hated earplugs Summary: 5 Stars
Hear all the music. These plugs have virtually none of the muddy, 'basement'-like sound of competitors' plugs. Also, the smaller diameter makes wearing them far more comfortable. The only downside is that the plastic filters/ends, while a handy way to remove from your ears (and likely a sonic necessity), jut out a bit and make me nervous--I'd hate to have them get 'hammered' in my ear like a nail in a deck board. That said, this is a great product. I can practice or play for several hours and not get 'full ears', ringing or headaches. These plugs come as close to 'turning everything down' as you can get without going for custom fitted filters. Drummers: these are far better than Vaters drum plugs or Vic Firth's huge 'cans' (none of the sweat). You could wear these on a gig and actually hear what's going on and be protected from the (occasional) sound-check eq'-ing feedback.
