Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Grundig S350 Deluxe AM/FM/Shortwave Radio, BlackCustomer Review: Good radio Summary: 4 Stars
I have had two of these since I bought them at a store on sale about 4 years ago. I needed a replacement for my 25 year old GE super radio that had finally failed. The fine tuning knob was broken on one of them when I bought it, but it works OK without it. I wasn't super impressed by the SW reception, but I only wanted SW as an occasional user, so not a big deal for me. The radio is a bit more fragile than the old super radio and the reception is not quite as good, but certainly good for an under $100 radio. The battery options are nice. (If you want to listen to SW you need to unplug it or the transformer buzz will drown out the reception.) The AM and FM are very good. The sleep timer is a pain. The radio decides, based on the length of time you press the on button, whether to turn the radio on, or to activate the sleep timer. This is absurd. Many times I hit the power button in the morning while I am making coffee, and the darn thing will turn itself off again after a couple of minutes. Before I have my coffee, the last thing on my mind is bending over and staring at the display while I turn the radio on to see if indeed it is turning on or simply engaging the sleep timer. The AC power jack is not positioned well either. It plugs into the back center of the radio and sticks straight out about 2 inches in the back preventing it from being placed against a wall. I haven't tried the external antenna, but it is a nice feature if you really wanted to try for weaker stations. (I am not really into radios that much, but realize they are very important when there is a disaster)
You can spend a lot more on a radio, and I am sure get better quality and performance, but for a casual user, this is a high value radio. Just baby the knobs.
Customer Review: Sleep Timer Summary: 4 Stars
This is not really a review. I will probably update this after I have had a chance to really get to know this radio. I recently purchased a GS350DL from RadioShack and so far I am quite happy with it, but I was on the verge of returning it because the Sleep Timer does not work according to the instructions on page 15 of the manual. It says repeated pressing of the Power&Sleep button will finally set the Sleep Timer to off which is how I would like use the radio. Unfortunately this does not happen and the sleep interval simply cycles around to 90 again. Luckily I noticed the instructions on Page 11 regarding turning the radio on and off, and that saved the sale. All you have to do is hold the button for a second and the radio will turn on without the Sleep Timer being activated. I just thought I'd mention this for people like myself who are sure they know all about turning a radio on and off.
Customer Review: Fair or excellent depending on usage. Summary: 4 Stars
This is one of my keeper radios for a couple of reasons. #1, it's the most sensitive radio I've owned on MW. If you like to do some AM DX'ing, this radio is excellent. It's just as good as the "GE Super-Radio". I'm in the NY area, and can pick up AM stations all over the US and Canada. #2, the audio quality is excellent. Battery life is also excellent. As shortwave radio, it has its shortcomings. By design, the radio has an analog tuner with a digital display. This causes the radio to drift, as most analog radios do. Many people think because it has a digital frequency display, that it's a digital tuner. Not so. If drift is going to annoy you, then look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Excellent Sound Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this mostly to use outside in the back yard, and the sound is excellent. Reception is quite good, but it tends to drift slightly off the station occasionally. It is a bit bulky, and there isn't a place to store the AC transformer, which would have been nice. There isn't much warning when the batteries quit - the metre goes from full charge to dead rather fast. The fact that there is no presets isn't a big problem for me because the tuning dial is fast. Before ordering this through Amazon, check with your local radio store. I am in Canada, and it ended up costing over $140 through Amazon, but it was $99 at The Source. Live and learn.

Plug it in then *** READ THE DIRECTIONS ***
I find the display difficult to see at times without adjusting my angle of view.
I purchased the unit for AM use during power outages.
I like the fact it has the option for 4-D cells for battery power.
I have not been successful with tuning in SW stations.
I have picked up AM stations LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Utah, Washington and Oregon.
We now use the unit to air a small station 70 miles away during the weekends.
I find the AM sound quality acceptable for this use.
