Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of ETON G5 AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio with SSB (Single Side Band)Customer Review: Radio is very good, but price is nothing special Summary: 4 Stars
The Grundig G5 is a fine performing world band radio. It just isn't worth the price IMO. I also own the Kaito KA1102, and Sony ICF-SW7600GR. The Kaito costs 1/2 the price and performs equally as well. IMO, the KA1102 is the best deal in world band receivers. It's not quite as easy to use as the G5, and the sound isn't quite as good, but it is a much better value. The Sony costs slightly less than the Grundig, but performs equally as well on AM, and beats the Grundig on SSB. Mainly due to its synchronous detection circuitry. The one thing I like about the Grundig over the Sony is the fact you can charge the batteries in the radio. You can also do this with the Kaito. You can't do that with the Sony, and it also doesn't include the AC adapter. All in all, you can go wrong with any of these 3 radios. But I can't see paying twice as much for it over the Kaito, and the Sony is a slightly better performing radio, that costs slightly less.
04/2010 Update:
Wow. Since my review from 2008, the price of this radio has dropped from $140, to under $90. At this price, it is a great bargain. It's easily a 5 star radio at it's current price.
Customer Review: Kaito 1103 v. Grundig G5 Summary: 4 Stars
After three years I just couldn't take the Kaito's two step volume control anymore...it's truly ridiculous. I had been looking at the Grundig (G3, actually, as I think all radios should have a line-in feature, for mp3 use) as a replacement. There was a "price-break" and I ended up buying the wrong radio in a hurry...who could remember that the G3 is actually a more sophisticated version of the G5? Not me. There is still a 50 dollar premium for just one feature (unless you listen to aircraft band), i.e., the line-in, which I think is silly.
Anyway, against a three year old 1103, the G5 has significantly better FM reception, a nicer (crisper, more dimensional) sounding speaker, and better ergonomics.
What I don't like about the G5:
Signal meter does not function for FM
Clock is a barely readable, anemic display
Function button, memory recall system a little lame (the 1103 really shines here)
Rubbery finish too tacky, creepy, attracts grease
General appearance uberFUNCTIONAL, not very stylish nor clever.
Kinda flimsy, in hand
I use it every day.
Customer Review: great radio, lousy vendor Summary: 4 Stars
The radio works well with the exception that it does not receive SW off of the whip antenna.
SW works great on an external long wire.
SSB is very good. I am listening to Puerto Rico at the moment and it hears the signal as well as my $500 Satellit 800.
AM is excellent
FM is good
This unit was bought new. It wasnt. The display was all scratched up.
It came from TS Liquidators?
I would have sent it back, but the RF performance is so good on it that I decided to buff out the display myself rather than return it.
Also I think the narrowband filter is a bit to narrow.
Beware TS Liquidators
Customer Review: Great Radio, but where is the real manual! Summary: 4 Stars
Just got this radio, it is great. Everything that Eton and Grundig name stands for is in the radio. But I have one question: Where is the real manual? All that this radio came with, is a little getting started book? Is this some kind of a joke? It is a complicated gadget, you would think that for that price it would come with a real book!!!
Oh overall, this radio doesn't need a review. It sounds great with really nice controls.
So:
Radio is 5 stars!
Manual is 1 star!
Customer Review: scratches?...we don't need no scratches!! Summary: 4 Stars
this is a good little radio...good sound and well made, and the knobs seem to be solidly attached to the radio, which is more than you can say for most similar products. As to the matter of the scratches, the display comes with a protective film overlayed. There is no mention of this anywhere in the packaging, but it can fairly easily be peeled back to reveal a pristine (unscratched) surface by the proud new owner.
