Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Escort Passport 9500ix Radar/Laser Detector (Black)

Customer Review: Great detector, Price games.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is clearly the best radar detector on the market. I am very dissapoined in Amazon however. They show it priced at 499.95 as though it's a great deal with a price cut of about $50. This is nonesense as both Amazon and virtually every other retail and online store has been selling the 9500IX for this 499.95 price since it's introduction. I even saw Amazon selling this for around 440 at one point. The 549 price shown as original is the typical marketing ploy that makes the assumption that the customer has never looked anywhere else for this item and beleives it to be a great deal. Noone spends this much on a radar detector without having done some shopping comparisions. The typcial mark it up and cut it down to make the customer think they are getting a deal. This is sad considering I have gotten some great deals on Amazon for years and they have very good customer service and return policies in general. That is why I'm particularly dissapointed in Amazons trickery here. Other escorts on here have had some really good deals like the escort passport solo 2. Should be able to get it on here most of the time for around 279. Shop carefully.

Customer Review: Worth the money
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first radar detector in 20 years and the reason I bought one is to go along with my new 270HP Nissan (had a truck). I read lots of articles on the internet and decided to purchase the 9500ix. I have had my 9500ix for a month now and have logged a few trips down the interstate and around town. One of the features I like about the 9500ix is it stores false alarms. I was driving by a shopping center and the message "stored" came up and come to find out the 9500ix stores false alarms. When the 9500ix goes off it is a real threat. The next time I drove by the alarm did not go off. On the interstate it has done a good job of locating radar traps. I also like the fetaure where you can mark radar traps. The unit is small. Easy to take off of the mount. We do not have red light cameras yet so I can not comment on that feature. I know the 9500ix has GPS. What would be nice is to combine a GPS with a Radar Detector. This way you could have only one device on your window. I am not a radar detector expert, but I do like the 9500ix. Make sure you push the mounting suction cups good to your window.

Customer Review: The right stuff.

You've come a long way baby. This 9500ix is pretty incredible. I remember when these things were four times larger in size and had a bad habit of squawking all the time. How do they cram so much smart technology into such a small package - radar and laser detection, GPS location, database memory, voice feedback?

Real world: I find it impressive when I back the car out of the garage and the sexy voice comes on saying "GPS signal acquired" while I'm still in the driveway. I know it's redundant but I like the speedometer function because on those interstate runs it's more accurate than the optimistic analog dash speedo dial. Detection/performance of course is the big deal you're paying for and it just flat out works - from experience I know when I hear a beep, I find it wise not to think I'm smarter than this device. In the high level operation mode it's really slick and simple - when you drive by a shopping mall you want it to ignore, or when you drive by a radar trap location, you just hit a button and they're logged into the memory. Great packaging inside and out - outstanding piece of road gear!

Customer Review: Regular commuter likes it allot.

I've had a number of detectors in the past but not recently.

First, the new units are powered with the USB cord so you don't need to use a laptop in the car or a separate 12v source in the house anymore. Still does NOT come with a USB cable but I had one laying around from a Garmin Forerunner. They should include one at this price level.

Unit is highly customizable so you can get it to display what you like an not other things. For example, I don't have the speed displayed at the onset of an alert or at all. The frequency readout is cool and doesn't take much to search online for standard radar bands used in speed detection by authorities.

The GPS alert lockout works well. Speed signs and door openers you normally encounter get locked out so fewer alerts but if another radar shows up in the same spot with a different freq., you will get a new alert.

My only real complaint is that the brightness on the included Smart Cord does not dim with the unit under low light conditions. Other than that, very satisfied. So far, seems to do all that it purports.

Customer Review: Great Detector
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't had a radar detector in years, mainly because I tired of the false alarms. This detector seems to solve that problem and the rare false alarms are easily recognized and remembered with the GPS function. Despite this feature, it still seems to sniff out true danger in plenty of time on both the highway and around town. The auto speed sensing feature that adjusts sensitivity to your speed is also a great feature.

I looked at permanently installed detectors, but found the one in the $700-$1,000 range had less detecting capabilities and the one for $2,000 was too expensive for me (and is permanent - supposedly can't be uninstalled and reinstalled in another car). While only time will tell how good it really is at preventing tickets, I think it is a great overall pick, particularly for the price compared to installed systems. I'd love to not have a cord hanging, but I just can't see spending the premium to get rid of it and have a permanent installation. My research brought me to this product as the best under $500 and I haven't seen anything to contradict that conclusion.
