I purchased this so that I could have an external battery pack that takes batteries instead of needing to be charged via an outlet. This works to charge my iPhone (1st gen) and my iPods (classic 160, iPod with video 5.5). This doesn't work to charge the Nano 4th gen. It takes 4 AA batteries which will be easy to get at any store and it only cost $12. Good buy that I would recommend.
