Customer Review: Overzealous improvements
Summary: 4 Stars

Much props to EA for such a fantastic OVERHAUL of the game- so a large overhaul that they mis judged the level of playability. Heres the breakdown:
Pros:
-Much improved graphics
-Much improved control, approaching the Winning eleven level; I REALLY like Off the ball- give the guy who thought that up a nice bonus.
-More game types: practice etc.
-Improved dead ball situations- still room for improvement
-Online of course, but its expected.
Cons:
-Slow gameplay- if the argument is that its more realistic, well... ITS TOO REALISTIC THEN. Needs to be sped up a touch more- esp. passing. Fast passes e.g. one touch passes, etc., ARE ALSO TOO SLOW.
-VERY BUGGY thru pass & lobbing. I think they overcompensated A.I. to direct ball movement- sometimes centering the ball is the only option when the should be more.
-Radar is very large now, tho with Off the ball, I don't think you need it.
-Replays suck. Whoever thought of replaying the scoring teams goalie should be shot, and fired.
-They moved from one bad menu UI, to a better yet still bad UI...

Overall: EA has made some significant steps in this release showing an impressive blend of graphics and realism. The game is however marred by obvious bugs and slow gameplay. Good try though, but no cigar. Still a good buy to play w/ friends.

Customer Review: Worth Your Money
Summary: 4 Stars

I give this game four stars. People are being to tough on this game, and saying things that aren't even true. I wouldn't consider the gameplay in Fifa 2004 slow. Have any of you people ever watched european soccer? You're not suppossed to just be able to run down the field and score 12 goals in a game.Thats why you hardly ever see more than two goals scored in a game. I like the gameplay in Fifa 2004 because it makes it difficult to score, just like in real life. The one thing Fifa 2004 needs to improve for next year's title is additional game modes. This year there's the new career mode, which lets you start off as a manager with any team, and try to raise your prestige over five years. I wish the careers were longer than 5 years, but it's better then no career mode at all. Another thing Fifa lacks is create a player, or team, which has been in previous versions of Fifa. Also, you can have your own tournament, but you have to use the tournament layout of cups like the FA cup and others. Another thing I like about Fifa is the variety of league teams. Some people obviously don't watch club teams and only care about international teams, but club teams is what soccer is all about except for tournaments every four years like the World Cup and European Cup. Overall, this game is definetly worth buying, and worth your money.

Customer Review: Not for the uninitiated
Summary: 4 Stars

This game is B-O-R-I-N-G. I love soccer and I couldn't wait to buy it but it's just so slow! I've had the game for 6 months and every once in a while I take it out to play a game and see if maybe I'm missing something but I end up turning it off after a few minutes.

I've heard a lot of gripe about certain teams that are missing and if I may also add to it -- there are no Latin American or Caribbean teams! Where is Mexico? Costa Rica? Where is Jamaica for heaven's sake?

I bought this game for two reasons -- because I love soccer and because you can switch the commentary to Spanish. I'm not a gamer, just a weekend/every once in a while non-expert who enjoys PS2 as a break in monotony. You might like this game if you are really into video games and understand their limitations. I'm a beginner so I was expecting so much more. I don't know how to choose teams correctly and the instructions were unclear to me. You get an areal view of the game while the ball is in play and that makes the players so small to me that it takes away from the excitement.

That said, I'm going to continue to play it in hopes that I might learn to like it. Please try to rent this title before you buy it, I regret having spent over (...) for a game I may never fully comprehend.

Customer Review: Good but could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

In another attempt for EA to make a hit with the soccer fans, FIFA 2004 hits the target, but misses the bulls eye. First things first, the gameplay is slow. At first this bothered me and I hated the game. After playing for awhile I realized that the gameplay has to be slow in order to take full advantage of "Of the Ball Control." Which is a great improvement to the game. The atmosphere and graphics are amazing in this game. Great job EA. Another improvement that hits the target is the Career Mode. Career Mode has always been NEEDED in sports games, yet EA doesn't give its all. The career mode is only for five years, hardly any time to make a weak team great. EA NEEDS to make its soccer career mode a combination of NCAA 2004 and Owner Mode in Madden 2004. That would be the best for soccer. EA should attempt to refine how soccer players play. Not always does someone attempt to tackle and win the ball, or where is the dancin that so many greats the world over have mastered. An 100 percent effort in Freestyle for soccer would be great too. Overall this is a good game. Get used to Off The Ball Control before you yell or throw the controls cause the game is to slow. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and awesome goal celebrations.

Customer Review: not a bad game
Summary: 4 Stars

before i bought this game i had read some of the reviews, and to tell you the truth they were all negative, you know saying that the game was too slow, and that there were no holland and the list goes on and on, but when i got it, i was surprised yes it was slow but that's not a bad thing 'cause now you actually have time to pass with more accuracy and that's good, the enviorement that surrounds the game is awesome!! the uniforms are up to date and the players look the same, the defense is smarter, and yes it's pretty hard to score sometimes, but EA has given you the choice of the R2 button, which allows you to walk, and if you're in the striking zone you press that button and you can execute better giving you the chance to enter the goalkepper zone and score, so you don't have to do it from a long range, know i've noticed something while in carrer and that is: no rain at all, and the special moves!!! DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO DO A BICYCLE KICK??? 'cause i haven't seen any type of it so if you know tell us 'cause i'm not the only one dying to know!!!! but besides that, is a pretty good game!!
