I had same experience like one of the reviewers here, and started by connecting the Midi in cable side in the keyboard midi IN and same for Midi out.
and this setup did not work, then i tried to swap the IN from cable side to out of the keyboard and this worked just fine.
i am using a labtop with windows XP proffisional and many music softwares including the old and gold teach me music, all worked fine.
I was not that glad by any hardware i bought more than this little cable which enabled me to connect the labtop to the piano.

I was very frustrated by latency issues until I checked the reviews here. Only one person mentioned having a latency issue but it was the fault of the sound card and not this E-Mu device. On a hunch, I upgraded my Realtek HD Audio Codec driver to the latest version and my latency issues disappeared! This is with a Realtek ALC888 audio controller, which is not a terribly high quality product -- still, I had no problem getting the E-Mu device to work. There may still be *some* latency, other reviewers have mentioned 4 ms, but this is irrelevant for my purposes.Customer Review: The PERFECT Midi solution

If you're in need of a well-made, easy-to-use Midi Interface, look no further than the E-MU EM8180. It works. Period.
Currently I am using Logic Pro on a PowerMac Dual 1.8 G5 with 2GB of RAM. Previously I'd composed music on a Sony Vaio, which utilized a totally different Midi Interface connector. Obviously I needed a USB-powered Midi device for my Mac, and immediately found the E-MU EM8180 on Amazon. Very simple, very easy to hook-up, and begins working right away.
Highly recommended.

If you have older musical equipment with a MIDI physical interface and want to connect it to your current computer, this is an excellent option. It is very compact, scarcely larger than just the cables, and the activity lights are a very useful option.
If you don't have current equipment with MIDI connectors, however, you probably won't need this. Most newer electronics will support the MIDI protocol via a USB or Firewire interface.

This is a great little device for less than $30.00. It acually allows up to 16 tracks and is easy to hook up. It's brings a whole new life to even those little cheapo cortable keyboards.
