Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of ProTouch Keyboard Protector, MacBook Pro 15/17" - Arctic ClearCustomer Review: Serves the purpose, but not great Summary: 3 Stars
Have this for my 17-inch MacBook Pro. It doesn't exactly fit the keys, which I find annoying, but it fits well enough to still type with it, so it serves the stated purpose of keeping dust, dirt and spills out of the cracks between keys. However, if you're using it to keep smudges/key outlines off your screen, you'll have to remove it every time you close your laptop -- the same dirt and oil that would otherwise be directly on your keys is now on the keyboard cover, so that still gets transferred to the screen upon contact unless you take out the cover to close the latop, and clean the cover regularly. **Hint -- If your screen is already smudged and you fear it's permanent damage, it's probably not. It's just that matte screens on these can be harder to clean. Just power down the Mac, spray some oxygenated glass cleaner directly onto a soft cloth, and clean off the offending smudges and that awful ghost-outline of the keyboard by GENTLY rubbing them away in small circles. NEVER SPRAY CLEANER DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN, and be gentle gentle gentle! Use a direct lighting source so you can better see the smudges, and you'll use less elbow grease. I did this the other day at the recommendation of a Mac refurbishing expert, and was THRILLED to have a like-brand-new screen again. Now I just need to find a keyboard cover that fits my MacPro keys *exactly* - any recommendations??
Customer Review: Protection vs. Visibility Summary: 3 Stars
If you are like me and enjoy having a cup of coffee sitting next to your laptop, then this is insurance against a catastrophic spill. The big downside is that this keyboard protector seriously reduces the visibility of the keys. At a desk I find this tolerable but if the laptop is balanced on my knees, angled slightly away from me, then it is very difficult to see the keys. Obviously if you're a touch typist this is not going to be so much of an issue.
On the plus side I really like the silky feel of the keys under the protector. Its plastic also seems to have an anti-static effect since less dust seems to be transferred to my screen from the keyboard when I close the laptop.
The protector that fits the older MacBook Pro will also fit a PowerBook G4 (but not the new late 2008 model of the MacBook Pro).
Customer Review: ProTouch Keyboard Protector, Macbook Pro 15" Summary: 3 Stars
I am a little bit disappointed in this product because I have since seen similar ones that fit better, possibly because they are made with a different proportion of silicone. They were not as rubbery and seemed to fit better, more fitted to the keys than this one. In addition, I bought this with the Marware Deluxe Protection Pack and they are obviously not made to go together because I had to trim the keyboard protector down to make it fit with the wrist pad. However now, with the both of them, I have complete keyboard and wrist area protection that overall gives me a comfortable, clean and efficient keyboarding experience. I guess I have gotten over my initial disappointment .........somewhat!
Customer Review: Protects but isn't as clear as I'd like Summary: 3 Stars
It fits well, protects the keys and is easy to wash. The big issue for me is that if you have the laptop on your lap you can't see the letters etc on the keyboard because its not clear. Its more of a frosted tint. So unless you are at a desk and looking straight down, then you will have a hard time seeing the letters.
Customer Review: Good but can't see the keys anymore Summary: 2 Stars
This is a great idea, very useful to protect your keyboard. I think that computer companies should always integrate this kind of protection to the keyboard. Keyboard aren't cheap, and on laptops if you spill your coffee, your laptop is pretty much dead. So this comes in as an important piece of protection.
Unfortunately in low light environment, especially when there's still enough light for the backlight of the keyboard to be off, you just can't see the keys anymore. Because of this issue, 1/2 of the time i'm not using the protection. The protection is very sticky on the side that goes against the keyboard, meaning that when you don't use it, it gathers a lot of dust very quickly, beating the purpose of having that "skin" on top of your keyboard.
Another good idea, that really needs more thinking, as to what material should be used so that it's fully transparent.
