I see a lot of negative reviews here. Let's get the obvious out of the way; This thing is not a miracle worker. If your disc has deep gouges, nothing will help that. Get a new disc and be more careful next time. SkipDr corrects data read errors caused by dirt and scratches by stripping away a very thin layer from the surface of the cd. This does not affect the data in any way, as the pits are located much further down on a layer far away from the protective clear plastic.
I've only used this on CDs, and it has worked fairly well. I had one cd that I thought was beyond all repair. granted, it took 4(!) passes to get it to play again, but it DOES work. The only gripe I have is that it feels flimsy with cheap plastic construction.

This is a vey good product. However it is a last ditch save for damaged disks. NOT A CLEANING PRODUCT. It will polish a thin layer of plastic off the disk, and it will have a slightly more matt aperance for doing so. (as well as the lines that you have read about) I WILL NOT MAKE A GOOD CD EVEN BETTER . . . It just might save those 1 or 2 CD's that some terrible accident caused it to get this way. If you got anymore than a few CD's to restore . . . you got to put them out of the reach of those kids that dont understand the the value of money. back a few up on the burner and let them play with those.
USE A LOT OF WATER. 5 or so squirts . . . even then i give an extra spray on to the area of the disk traveling into the edge.

When I worked at a library we used one of these on our music CDs, so when my son came to me and told me one of his brand new XBox games was no longer working (the machine said the disc was the wrong format), I first contacted tech support who ran me through some options...one being cleaning. So I cleaned the disc manually and although I could see no scratches, it still would no work, so I ordered the skipdoctor.The disc is totally usable again! My kids have since brought me a stack of music CDs that were destined for the trash as they were pretty well scratched up, and I am in the process of fixing all of those.
I find the skipdoctor easy to use, and I would recommend this to anyone.

I read some reviews on this product and decided to give it a try. After several attempts on an old MC Hammer CD I came to realize this thing wasn't working. But then, I tried it on a PS2 disc and voila! The thing worked so well it actually sped up loading times. So, what did I do differently? I figured out the trick. Throughout the whole process you must turn at the same speed, as to create an equal surface texture throughout the whole disc. Then I tried it on the MC hammer cd and voila! Both the CD and DVD both play well. So why the 4 of 5 stars? If i didn't figure out the turn trick it would have never worked.Customer Review: Does exactly what the name implies

I've been using the SkipDoctor products since they were first released. Some CDs are simply too far gone, but the majority of discs can be repaired to a readable state (assuming your player isn't overly sensitive). The biggest problem with the manual product is that it takes quite a while to rotate the disc through the course of the polishing. Your arm will get tired, but the result is usually worth it. I wouldn't use it on a disc that doesn't have any problems, but if you're trying to salvage something (or at least buy yourself enough time to rip or copy it), this product is a great last-ditch effort.
