Customer Review: Does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used this product and its sister product the DVD Doctor to repair a few dozen CDs and DVDs. It has worked well in most cases. I use Exact Audio Copy to make MP3s. I have had disc show up with errors in EAC and then rip perfectly after a run through the Doctor.

The Doctors use a wet sanding technique to remove a layer of plastic over the whole surface of a disk to get remove scratches. It is not a spot polisher. The Doctors will not fix very deep scratches, but they will do a good job on light scratches, even if there are hundreds of them. Some times, even if a run through the Doctor does not completely remove a visible scratch, it will help enough to fix an error. You will notice that the disk will be covered with hundreds of very light radial sanding marks. These will buff out some with the included felt pad, but not completely. I have not had these cause a disk to play any worse than it was before.

Note: These machines will not repair Nintendo Game Cube games and other small form disks, especially not the DVD Doctor. The only disk I have had totally fail repair was a Game Cube game.

Customer Review: Worked on 9 out of 13 damaged discs...

Has paid for itself already. The discs that it couldn't repair were a loss regardless, so no harm from trying. In a previous review, Nanci notes that it leaves a 'film' on the disc that doesn't come off. She failed to read the directions which explain on page 1 under 'General Description':

"...the right amount of material is removed from the disc and only a light radial pattern remains. This pattern is ignored by all of the devices (e.g. CD players, DVD players, CD drives, etc) that read your discs."

...and this seems to be the case. I was a little disturbed by this pattern at first, but the discs seem to retain their clarity with no dropouts or errors (if the repair worked). I am an audio engineer, and a careful (snobbish?) listener. This product should save you money, unless you are in the habit of stacking your CD's while not in the case, or if you leave them face down on the end table, accidently using them as coasters (i.e. general mishandling). Normal useage scuffs and scratches seem to repair well.

Customer Review: Skip Doctor works if you do it right
Summary: 4 Stars

I read over some of the reviews on amazon for the skip doctor and it seemed like it ruined more cd's than it fixed, so i thought ok I'll stay away. Then I saw it at Curcit City for $20.00,thought to myself should I or shouldn't I get it?,well I endind up getting it cause I have a playstation game giving me problems. I couldn't get it to work at first but then I closely read the instructions maybe twice and it worked. Ya soake the disk with the little spray bottle put it on the skip doctor turn it around once spray the disk again put it back on the skip doctor and turn it around one more time, take the disk off of skip doctor gently dry it with the blue cloth that came with the skip doctor and when the disk is dry take the little white cloth go around the disk til it has its shine back and all the scratches takeing out of it. Skip Doctor actually works if you do it right.

Customer Review: It works well !!

I purchased the Skipdoctor and then came here and read the reviews. I must say on my first try, I was not impressed plus I felt I had to read the instructions repeatedly so not to screw it up. However, after reading the reviews I realized it was a good idea to use it at least three times for bad scratches. I am very happy to say it saved my treasured Metallica cds so for that alone I am deliriously happy. Skip doctor works well as I was very skeptical about these so called repair kits but please give this a try before you dump your cds. However my biggest grief with this product was the arm to put the cd onto. I was scared all the while about breaking it off when putting on and taking off my cd. Motorized version was not available for me to purchase but the cranking handle is not too bad. Filmsy plastic design. But otherwise it does what it says

Customer Review: Great product

I bought the Skipdoctor because we have several DVDs that our Toshiba player has problems with. One of the DVDs is my wife's favorite Pilates that she tried to remove some scratches by taking a friends advice and used soft scrub... Scratched the *@$!!* out of it, and after that both our computer and our DVD player rejected the disk all together. Well the Diskdoctor WORKED! It has removed all but the deepest scratches from atleast 20 CDs and DVDs. even the Pilates disk (after about 20 passes through the Diskdoctor) works now!

Downers: The unit it self seems flimsy, and is some times tricky to get open.

Uppers: It WORKS.

FYI: The polishing liquid is just distilled water, as per the literature. (Some people seem to get upset when they discover this fact. I'm not sure why.)
