Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS NavigatorsCustomer Review: $$$ Great Deal $$$ Summary: 5 Stars
I have this card for a few weeks now, and it is worth every penny. I've downloaded over a thousand dollar worth map software and there still a year to go.
Customer Review: Great value Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent quality maps that are well worth the price. There is a learning curve for the maps, but once you get the hang of it, it's a wealth of data.
Customer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased a map library subscription to use with my PN-60, and I am very satisfied. It may be that the PN-60 comes with the Topo North America 9.0 (as opposed to earlier versions), but I have had no problems with bugs, excessively slow download speeds, or the other issues that users of the 8.0 and PN-40 have described in their reviews.
That said, it is a drag that you can only download the 7.5 quads by clicking on each quad, but I have found that you can "click and drag" to highlight large "chunks" of quads and select them for downloads pretty easily. I would prefer if, as another reviewer suggested, you could download a whole set (I think the reviewer wanted a "Canada" set that could be accessed as one package). Perhaps it could be done on a statewide basis -- i.e. all of the state you want in one package. However, the file size would be huge, and I can imagine it would take forever to download, even broken into chunks. Still, it would be easier for a user interested in one state's quads.
I have found the satellite imagery to be excellent, although the files are substantially larger than the quads, and take longer to download. I am not sure to what use other reviewers are putting these files, but I am using them to provide additional data to help me navigate in the wilderness -- and the aerial images help in orienting myself.
I have not used the nautical maps as I am a landlubber, so I cannot comment on them.
Customer Review: Using with PN-40 Summary: 4 Stars
Lots of great map info here...too bad the Topo 7.0 software bundled with my Delorme PN-40 was/is so kludgy and funky to load.
I'm having a hard time differentiating between what I'm reviewing. The maps on the library are really pretty cool once you figure it out. The process to get them from the service to your computer, then from your computer to your GPS is a *nightmare*. Once you do it a few times (you have to load just a bit, or sections, of a bigger map at a time), it becomes more "rote"...but after doing this a few times and getting local maps on my GPS, I never logged in again and just use the base maps when I travel.
I like the Satellite and Aerial imagery, for sure, and the Boating waterways stuff seems to be there too...had a harder time loading that for some reason (I teach sailing, would like to be able to use these maps...but my patience with students is WAY better than with downloading and moving maps around).
Customer Review: Hard to download large areas Summary: 3 Stars
The interface for cutting your maps makes it hard to download large areas. This is very inefficient for example with the Canadian map packages. Sure its a great deal but you have to be willing to do hours worth of work to download the maps you want. It would be nice if they just had a topo map package of Canada. That said the aerial downloads for U.S. and hi resolution city imagery are amazing.
