Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of DeLorme Earthmate PN-20 Waterproof Hiking GPSCustomer Review: Earthmate PN-20 & Topo 8 Summary: 5 Stars
Delorme Earthmate PN-20 Handheld GPS (with Topo USA 8.0 & 1-GB SD Card & Reader) I have owned Lowrance, Magellan, and Garmin GPSR's and (nothing) compares with the value of this package. My last GPS was a Garmin 60CSX which is a excellent unit but the maps are expensive and lacking detail. The Colorado and Oregon are a step backwards in my opinion in both quality and features.
No extra crap like a camera, recorder, games, or other useless frills. Earthmate PN-20 is the best deal around if you are going off-road or just wanting to get there!
The Good: Earthmate PN-20 an easy to use highly sensitive receiver with excellent features. Most importantly the package comes with arguably best map package available. Throw in the the capability of aerial imagery, USGS7.5 Topos and NOAA charts what's not to like?
The Bad: Nothing I have found! What you will see is slower redraw speeds than the PN-30&40 but acceptable. A 2.2" diagonal display is not the largest you can buy but it is very easy to read.
Customer Review: Great hand held GPSr! I love it for hiking! Summary: 5 Stars
The Earthmate PN-20 has exceeded my hopes and expectations. We bought it for use while hiking and are not dissapointed at all! It can do so much that it will probably take us quite awhile to learn it all. The maps are much better than Garmins and the low price of downloading more is a even more of an advantage. While it is too slow for my taste in redrawing the maps for use in a vehicle, for hiking and biking it is more than what we need. Besides, with a screen as small as handhelds have, I wouldn't want to rely on them for vehicle use (we have the Nuvi 350 with a 4.5" screen and great software for vehicle use, so we are spoiled in that regard). If you have a need for speed spend more money and buy the new PN-40 which will give you the compass and some more. But if you want a very reasonably priced unit for geocaching, hiking or bicycling, and can walk (which will then allow the PN-20's compass to track)then go for this one. Are the unit and the map program easy to learn and use? No, but with all they are capable of that is a cheap price to pay.
Customer Review: Four point five rounds up to 5 Stars Summary: 5 Stars
Attractive, light, tough and smart:
This is a great GPS but not simple to set up and very difficult to fully master.
A setup and tutorial DVD is included and should be run prior to ANYTHING else!
It came with everything I might ever need except the SD card needs to be larger, it quickly overflowed and so I replaced it with a 2GB card.
Battery life is excellent, satellite acquisition is excellent, interface buttons are not exactly intuitive but are not bad.
PC interface is simple and fast, ... which is good as the PN-20 is useless without a good computer.
The screen is crisp and clear, has backlight for night viewing.
Mastery of the Topo_7 interface software package takes time because it is so rich, it is a great cartography program.
I recommend this Personal Navigator, it is fun and it could be a life saver.
Customer Review: Super GPS - one stop shopping Summary: 5 Stars
I am not a GPS nerd, meaning I haven't had GPS for years and have 5 or 6 models that track the history of the technology. I wanted one for a long time, but none of them were "it". I wanted it all in one box - everything I might need including a waterproof GPS that I could take hunting and kayaking and fishing as well as use in the car for long trips as well as sync with my laptop, etc. etc. Well, this is it. This is one stop shopping as far as I'm concerned. This GPS does absolutely everything I want, right out of the box. DeLorme's products are top drawer. The unit is tough, the screen is bright, the controls are intuitive, the mapping software is incredibly detailed, customer support has been fantastic. I got the PN-20 that came with DVD's, as well as all the possible battery charging cables you could hope for, and I can't think of a situation where I don't have the right stuff. I couldn't be happier.
Customer Review: A Greate Value for the Buck Summary: 5 Stars
This device is 10x better than my old Magellan Explorist 200. More features, MUCH more intuitive than the 200, and really picks up the satellites well. They did nice job in creating a straight forward interface for the GPS. The fact that high quality topo and street maps are included makes this unit a great value for the dollar. I use it for geocaching, mark way points, and to track my mountain bike rides. If you like to geocache then you will love the fact that you can download cache coordinates directly to the GPS from the main geocache web site. I think you can only do this with Delorme and Garmin. I'm still playing with the mapping software on the PC. This software is not as intuitive as the GPS device. (Just say NO to Magellan--Just awful).
No compliants considering the price and how I use it.
