Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Drobo S 5-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800/eSATA Storage Array DRDR3A21Customer Review: Wow! Summary: 5 Stars
23MAR2011: Update: Overnighted replacement received yesterday morning. Moved disk stack over and the replacement started up as expected. Decided to erase & reformat the stack to 16TB (max size allowed) using Drobo Dashboard, and repartition the stack using Apple's Disk Utility - for Apple's Time Machine back-up software, I partition the stack into 2: one is 7.22GB = the amount of 16TB that Drobo Dashboard tells me is available for data, the other is set to FREE SPACE so Time Machine doesn't think it's available for use, and only the first partition shows up on the desktop. Anyway, connected via eSATA the transfer rate was approx 76MB/sec (3.308TB/12hr). Same size back-up on Firewire 800 took >3-days. Excellent!
21MAR2011: Update: There was a power failure on 19MAR2011. The new Drobo S did not survive it. Power is 12.11 VDC from the brick, but no lights whatsoever on the Drobo S. Contacted Data Robotics via email on Sunday, 20MAR2011. After a couple backNfourths about specific indications, they are overnighting a replacement unit. No complaints about that customer service, so my 5-stars still stand.
17MAR2011: Yesterday, I replaced my 1.5-year-old (fully operating) Drobo DDR04DD10 with the Drobo S DRDR3A21. I use Drobo solely for Time Machine back ups of my Mac Pro (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Xeon/8 GB RAM/4x1.5 GB HDs in concatenated raid - wish I gone with Striped Raid ). The previous Drobo had 4x2 TB HDs and required ~3.5 days to load my (current) 3.67 TB into Time Machine via Firewire 800. I transferred the Drobo's disk stack to the Drobo S, connected it to the Mac Pro with eSATA (cable included) via the Drobo S-recommended Tempo Sata E2P PCIe Card, started it up to see what was happening, and it was as if I hadn't done anything... the Mac just began using the new Drobo S. I added a Hitachi 2 TB Hard Drive and Drobo S incorporated it into the stack. I then reformatted the Drobo S with Dual Disk Redundancy (though I don't think I'll need that so I'll most likely revert to single disk failure protection), and started Time Machine yesterday at 0930 PST. It's already done 3.54 TB in 24-hours, and will probably be done in less than 2-hours (way less, I'm thinking). I haven't measured the transfer rate, but it appears to be about 3 GB per minute. Marvelous!
IMO, if you've got a Intel Mac and need data protection (doesn't everybody?) then a Drobo S is the way to go. Use Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, whatever... it just works.
