Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop AdapterCustomer Review: Fantastic! Fedora 13 User! Highly Recommended! Summary: 5 Stars
Before I buy this product, I bought 'TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless G PCI Adapter TEW-423PI' ($23) from Amazon. That was a nightmare. I spent a whole night to figure out how to make this PCI wireless card work for my Fedora 13 ('uname -r': 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64). That's painful experience. Eventually, I got it working and the signal drops often. I have to wait for a while every time I open a web page. I really can not bear with it. I decided to send it back after 1 day experience. Luckily, Amazon has a great customer service. YEAH!
This time, I spent a little more money as I planned. $49 dollars including express shipping (you know, I can not wait to try the new wireless card. I paid 3.99 more for one-day shipping) Cool, I got it one day after I ordered online. Although I spent twice as much as the money I spent on the TEW-423PI, I am very happy with D-Link DWA 556.
First, I was scared that I got the wrong card. (it happened to me before I got the TEW-423 PI. I got a wireless card for Dell laptop) I did not find the small PCI slot for DWA 556. I was panic and thought what's going on. It suppose to fit my Dell Inspiron 531 desktop. I went on google.com and search for DWA 556 installation picture. I noticed there is a small PCI slot which is easy to omit right below the slot for my video card. BINGO. When I found that slot, I was a little released. 5 minutes, installation is done!
Second, I was expecting to spend at least one hour to figure out how to make this PCI wireless card work since my former experience with TEW 423PI + Fedora 13. Linux is great but you do have to know more so that you can use it freely. I did not need to use the CD coming with the card at all. I just used a small software (Wireless Assistant 0.57) installed from system->Administration->Add/Remove Software. It took care of everything. Pay attention, if you use this assistant software, release the control by NetworkManager. (system->Administration->Network, New->set up your wireless, then use Edit to review your wireless, the first option: "controlled by NetworkManager" should not be chosen. BINGO!)
Last, enjoy the fast speed and stable connection from DWA 556.
The web pages show up much faster. I love it.
I want to write my experience with DWA 556 + Fedora 13 so that it will be helpful to the Linux users.
By the way, DWA 556 chips is : ATHEROS AR5418 My fedora 13 recognized this card itself. I did not install any driver. COOL! Now I enjoy surfing the internet at my study room not downstairs close to the router. Great signal even from 2nd floor. YEAH!
