Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Quick (Really) -- No Configuration and Inexpensive
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered/received this 8-Port Gigabit switch by D-Link to connect three PCs (each with Gigabit NICs), one laserjet printer and one digital sender/scanner to the Verizon FIOS router. The switch's speed indicator clearly shows 1 Gbit (green - all three PCs) or 100 Mbps (yellow - router) connectivity; no indicator light means 10 Mbps link (printer and digital sender/scanner). All eight ports are autosensing/autoconfigurable with regards to MDI/MDIX connections, e.g., I did not have to use a crossover cable to connect the router to the switch. Straight out of the box, moved Ethernet cables from the router and older 100 Mbps switch onto the D-Link DGS-2208, plugged in the power adapter and we're up and running at significantly higher speeds. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Worked like a charm
Summary: 5 Stars

All I did was plug it in, reboot my computer for good measure and it just worked.

I now have 4 computers, two switches and one wireless router. I was using the wireless router to connect everything in the living room to everything in the back room (on the switch), but now the two rooms are connected directly switch to switch and everything does seem faster now. I did not check timings. I purchased this because the plugs on the wireless router were loose and the cords kept coming loose every time I futz behind the computer, plus I did not have enough jacks anyway, I was always having to unplug 1 cord to plug in the BluRay player for updates. Now with 8 ports, I am good to go.

Customer Review: Cool and simple
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a DGS-2208 (HW ver C1) mounted in my enclosed wiring cabinet, which is in the wall of a walk-in closet. I love the fact that this switch uses little power and runs cool. The 8-port version was only slightly more costly than the 5-port version, and it allowed me to connect all rooms permanently. Installation was a snap, and performance is impeccable.

The only minor imperfection is that I can't tell the difference between 100 and 1000 Mb/s connections from the tiny leds -- they all look the same color to me. This doesn't matter in regular use because there's nobody in the closet looking at the leds (it would be nice to have an option to turn all leds off to save more power).

Customer Review: Works great in a mixed speed network
Summary: 5 Stars

I use a collection of Cisco enterprise switches and routers at work. You're not going to get the same performance using this switch; nor are you going to have all the configuration options that you get with a managed switch, but for a basic, unmanaged GigE switch this is perfect. And there is something refreshing knowing you don't have to configure the switch and remember how you have configured the VLANs etc.

Do not listen to the person who said that the switch down-shunted all ports to the slowest possible speed. That's just plain wet. Just don't plug a 10/100 NIC into one of the ports and expect the switch to magically turn it into a GigE connection.

Customer Review: Worked flawlessly
Summary: 5 Stars

This unit worked perfectly. I needed to build a wired network to stream audio and video to different rooms in my house. Plugged it in, it did a continuity check on my pre-wired Cat5e cables, and that was it. It identified two bad cable runs which once fixed, came up fine. I saw some earlier posts saying that it can't deal simultaneously with 1000 Mbps and 100 Mbps connections, and all 8 ports revert to the lowest connected speed. That is not true. The ports connected to my 1000 Mbps router and desktops show a 1000Mbps connection. The devices (Xbox, Direct TV DVR, etc) that are only 100 Mbps connect that way. Works as advertised. Couldn't be happier with the product. Thanks Amazon!
