Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Faster than my old one and easy to install
Summary: 5 Stars

I grabbed this switch to replace a 5 port 10/100 switch I had just outgrown. It was a simple unplug and replug install and I was very curious if the gigabit interface would improve my network transfers between my Netgear Readynas (has gigabit) and my PC (has gigabit). I'm delighted to say that it did. My old switch would peak at about 11Megs/second while this new one is about 22 Megs/second on writing and almost 40Megs/second on reads. This saves my considerable time in transferring files and I've got more ports to boot. I can confirm that having 100mb/sec devices on the switch doesn't bottleneck the speed. My printer and DirecTV DVR are both 100mbit devices (confirmed with the switches speed LED) but my speed was still much better than my old 100mb/s switch.

I can't account to the "green-ness" of the switch, but I have no reason to doubt it. I should also mention that the power brick is tiny... my old switch's wall-wart was almost as large as the switch, this one is tiny.

Customer Review: Works exactly as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

The switch is meant to be a low cost way to provide connectivity between computers. It has the ability to transfer at up to 1 Gbps. It also has the advantage of being "green" in that it can adjust power usage to the length of the cables and the activity of the LAN.

Setup was literally as easy as plugging in the power and the cables and going. Out of the box it performed flawlessly at file transfers and allowing our computers to talk to each other. The manual was largely unnecessary.

I cannot vouch for the green features as I do not have the equipment to measure them, but it appears to operate as advertised in that respect as well. D-Link is a reputable OEM, so i tend to accept their claims.

The cost of the switch was very reasonable, and it delivers everything we want for performance. I do not see any limitations on using this in any application.

Customer Review: It Just Works!!
Summary: 5 Stars

To think that one can have Gbit ethernet in the home/small office at such an affordable price is just amazing to me. This switch really gives you no other option for high speed network connectivity. I also own a linksys 8 port and a netgear 8 port and both of them have had the same issue, requiring me to power off/on to restore connectivity. That being said, it could be a bad NIC somewhere on my network. However, I now own three of these 8 port D-Link switches and I have not had to power them down once.

There's really no reason to post pros/cons. This switch offers a complete management-free switched environment that performs up to expectations. I would definitely recommend buying this for any home and/or small office. Especially, if you transfer large files such as videos and/or music and image collections. Also great if you have a central backup repository for PC's/Macs.

Customer Review: Works well.

It works well. Supports jumbo frames, runs fairly cool, no fan, no noise. I have had absolutely no issues in a mixed mode environment as some other reviews mentioned, this must have been resolved in a product revision.

I only have two gripes and they are nitpicking...

I wish there was a different color between links at 100 and 1000... I have to look very closely to tell link speeds.

The other nitpick is that this is really only a 7 port hub, as you lose one for the uplink. I know this is a common practice nowadays, but my last few hubs all had dedicated uplink ports. 7 sounds like enough but throw a couple of computers together and the ports vanish quickly. I would have gone with the 16 port switch, but it is 4X the price at $160. Oh well, my friends will just have to bring their own hub with them when they come over.

Customer Review: Hassle free
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this switch as part of my home network expansion/rationalization after a basement remodel. I redid my ethernet system, as well as my wireless system. I'm running a mixed wired/wireless system with a DSL internet connection (I have only DSL, satellite, or phone modem as options here). My DSL router is wired to my wireless router, which is in turn wired to the switch. The switch connects in 2 desktops, as well as 2 satellite TV DVRs, my stereo receiver (I know, overkill), and an Apple TV. The system runs seamlessly, whether I'm running my wired desktops or my laptop. All of the wired systems connect to the printer wirelessly and without a problem. The switch was simply plug and play. I have had no network issues in approximately 6 weeks of use. I am very happy with this product, as it does exactly what it says it does at a very reasonable price point.
