Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Highly recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned this unit for over a year and a half now, and in that time it's been 100% reliable and worry-free. It just works. As a bonus, it runs noticeably cooler than an older 10/100 Linksys switch it has replaced. Running cool is always a good sign in electronic hardware.

The product's size/weight is a bit of a double-edged sword -- for those looking for a space-saving unit, I haven't seen any much smaller. However, it is so small and light that it takes a bit more care to situate the device as compared with larger units since merely the tension and weight from the network cabling can be sufficient to tip or drag the unit.

I plan to either buy another of these units, or its sibling, the D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch.

Customer Review: Great little product
Summary: 5 Stars

I couldn't have asked for a better switch. I was thinking using a switch was really complicated, and it's not.

My setup included me running a cat5e cable on the outside of my house, installed into wall plates on each end. One end has my router plugged into it, which is upstairs, and the other end plugs right into my switch, which is downstairs, and that's where the TV, directv, and PS3 are at. I've noticed way faster download speeds for my PS3, compared to when I had it going wirelessly. The directv on-demand service isn't that great, but it wasn't even when I was running a cat5e cable to it directly from the router. I think it's on their end.

4 ports for my components was plenty, and that's why I'm very satisfied with this little guy. It hides perfectly behind my center speaker on my entertainment center.

Customer Review: Great product...and you're doing something for the environment!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two of these switches in my house (the 5-port and the 8-port) and they have both been great. Not only are they priced well, but they also use less power (according to the marketing...i've never actually measured power at the outlet with a kill-a-watt or anything), and they look and feel nice. I don't know how D-Link managed to turn things around (I always thought their stuff was junk in the past) but their latest routers/switches/hubs are all fantastic.

I'm lucky enough to have my entire house wired for Ethernet and with these switches in the house, network performance has been great. It is a night/day difference between gigabit Ethernet and 802.11g/n. I can transfer files from computer to computer at 60MB/s (a 1GB file takes about 15 seconds)!

Customer Review: painless

A 100mHz switch (e.g. DES-1105) would have sufficed, but transfers among gigahertz-equipped PCs running Windows XP (which is notorious for inefficient networking) are noticeably quicker.
Not sure why this is called a "Desktop Switch", since it has wall-mounting slots on the bottom.
Runs noticeably cooler (and presumably uses less power) than D-Link's DGS-1005G.
Gigabit is rated for shorter distances over copper than 100mHz, but this switch tested error-free to a DGS-1005G using a very cheap RJ45 coupler and 100 + 50 ft generic cat5 running along metallic ductwork, plumbing, phone, RF coax, AC power.

I liked the first one so much that I bought another pair, a year later.
Packaging now brags about low energy consumption.

Customer Review: Great switch
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually bought this one as a gift for my dad, who had recently purchased a new USB & Network printer. He was constantly switching the USB cables between his two laptops and desktop to use the printer. Without any help from me, he was able to install the switch, hook up the network printer, reconfigure the printers from USB to network and get everything working. He loves having the freedom of being able to print from any computer without having to worry about switching cables. I purchased this particular switch because I already own two of these myself and use one in my den and one in my computer room. I have owned them for several years without a problem, and hooking up wired to them gives me the fastest speed available to my Gigabit Router.
