Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Customer Review: It Doesn't Get Much Faster than a Gigabit
Summary: 5 Stars

I've bought a few new computers lately, and all of them included Wireless-N so it was time for an upgrade for my wireless router. And since not all my computers are wireless - well, it was time to make the wired network at least as fast as the wireless!

So, I came upon the D-Link DGS-2205. 5 ports, which is just enough for me, and the ever-amazing 10/100/1000 megabit speeds it provides. Now, there isn't much that sets this switch apart from the rest of the crowd, but it is rather aesthetically pleasing, even if it might get tucked in a corner with a bunch of multicolored cables. The horizontal power adapter is a very welcome addition to my overcrowded power strips, keeping it out of the way of the outer outlets by shifting the bulk to the side, which makes it very compatible with wall outlets and vertical power strips. People with block or horizontal strips might want to stray away or find another adapter.
Overall, I'm very happy with this switch, I haven't a single problem with it since I installed it, even with all the ports lit up all the time.

Customer Review: Been working great for 9 months
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this back in Feb of 2009 and it's been working just great ever since. I just plugged it in and it just started working. I have my cable router plugged into one side and three PCs hooked into the other. One of these PCs is a fileserver running Windows Home Server and the other two are client PCs, one running XP and the other Windows 7. File transfers between the PCs are very quick. There is never a hiccup listening to music, streaming video or looking at photos. There is also no issue ripping CDs or DVDs directly from a client PC to the network shares on the fileserver. All of my client PCs point their My Documents directories to the WHS without issue. I have iTunes pointed out the the network share too. It's fast enough I can't tell much of a difference between local access and network access.

I haven't had any issues with the switch getting hot. It runs nice and cool.

The only thing I would have done different if I had to do it over again was choose the 8-port switch!

Customer Review: easy -- just connect it, that's all
Summary: 5 Stars

A good switch should require no real thought to install. You plug in, connect cat5e cables, and you're done. After that, it should work invisibly, giving you good throughput and no concerns whatsoever.

This one does that. If you need a modest-cost 5-port gigabit switch, I can recommend this one without reservation.

Notes: (1) If you don't need gigabit, you can get 100mb equipment pretty cheap right now. (2) Keep in mind that you use 1 port in a switch for the incoming cable, so a 5-port gives you connection to 4 devices, 8-port allows for 7 devices, etc. (Yeah, I know, it's dumb, but that's the way techies think.) (3) If you think you might need a couple more ports later, then definitely get the 8-port switch, since you don't pay that much more for the extra ports.

If you're concerned about expectations for the brand -- I am generally pretty happy with DLink products. I certainly haven't had any breaking right after 1 year of use, as I have had for some other brands.

Customer Review: Exactly as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a power user or propeller head, so my review will be written in english. I live rural and needed a way to route internet acess from my WildBlue modem to multiple computers in a large ranch house. Had terrible luck with a Netgear wireless router, worked, then did not work with new HP laptop.
Wireless schmireless, cables work. Read all the reviews, understood about 30% of them but got the general idea how an ethernet switch works. Only needed 3 ports, but 4 was the smallest so I ordered the D-Link DGS-2205. Very easy to hook up, truly plug and use. No heat from unit, status lights are clean and understandable, all-in-all a nice unit.

One small complaint, the instruction CD sent with the unit, way too complicated. I suppose there are some network set-ups that would require the 33 pages of instructions. However a simple home set-up paragraph of "plug this into this, and when these lights come on its working", would have been helpful for us ranchland types.

Customer Review: Perfect plug 'n play router
Summary: 5 Stars

As so many of the other reviewers have stated, this is a great little router. Very fast, compact, and simple to use. Just plug it in using the accompanied wall adapter, then hook up the internet LAN cable, and plug in your devices. I use it as a secondary router, off the main one, for my stereo/tv setup. It seems all newer home AV components have an ethernet port built in. So I use this device to connect my Oppo Blu Ray player, my Denon AVR, and my Sony XBR9 TV.

It works great and allows for fast streaming capabilities. The Denon is capable of streaming internet radio, and this allows that to work just great. I am also in the process of creating a home network to my PC which will allow me to stream anything from my computer to the TV / home theater system.

This router easily mounts to any wall or cabinet too, with the versatile mounting holes in the back. D-link made this one a winner for sure. Amazon shipped it free, and fast, using UPS.
