Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop SwitchCustomer Review: So Good You Forget All About It Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this switch for over a month now and since installing it I haven't given it another thought. Obviously it works exactly as advertised and provides gigabit connectivity to all capable devices. Having owned and worked with numerous switches this one does a few things better than most:
1) Display - The lights on the front provide three pieces of information i) Link ii) Speed iii) Activity from two LEDs per port. The lower LED is solid green indicating a link and flashes to indicate activity. The top LED is green for 1000 Mbps and yellow for 100 Mbps. Differentiating using color lets you quickly detect any devices not correctly negotiating the link speed and helped me diagnose a faulty cable.
2) Heat - Unlike my DSL modem, wireless access point, or second switch (I won't mention the brands; but they are not D-Link) this D-Link emits no heat. The device is never even warm to the touch. I have a small wiring cabinet into which I installed my modem and other switch. Two days later the modem died from overheating. Not a problem anymore.
3) Energy Efficiency - Now I haven't actually tested this myself or noticed any savings on my electrical bill, but at the very least it makes me feel better about "going green" with devices that are powered on 24/7. I have no doubt the energy efficiency is a big part of the reason the device stays cooler.
The only downside with the device is that it cannot be easily stacked. Now, if you're looking to stack switches you should probably look at something a little bigger than a 5-port; however, this was a useful feature of my other switch and WAP because I could stack the two together and take up less desk space.
Overall, a five-star product at a great price.
Customer Review: D-Link DGS-2205 brief review Summary: 5 Stars
This switch is a total gem. I have never used D-Link switches before, but I saw this one on Amazon for a decent price and decided to give it a go. It is truly the easiest thing I've installed into my home network. I originally bought it for my computer room to allow 5 more PC's to connect to my router, but the router's ports ended up frying after a lightning strike. I am now using the switch to connect all of the computers in the house (through one port on the router that goes to the Switch's uplink) and am using a dumb hub in the computer room. I have seen no drop in performance (since everything is gigabit) for daily internet usage or gaming. I have about 9 - 12 devices connected to my network at any given time and I have not encountered any problems. My network consists of PCs (Windows and Linux based), an Xbox 360 (wired) and a Nintendo Wii (wireless), with a few wireless laptops. My router has let me down a bit, but that switch is a breath of fresh air.
The unit itself is small, quiet, and cool, even stacked on top of my router. It has display lights for connected devices, which are color coded depending on if the device is gigabit capable or only 100-Base (amber for 100-base, green for gigabit). The lights blink for activity. If it matters I have the 5V version. There was no need to configure anything when I connected everything up, because it just worked. I definitely recommend this switch to anyone.
Customer Review: Compact, Stable and Fast Network Switching Summary: 5 Stars
Having only one wired ethernet feed in my home theater location I was looking for a fast yet compact switch to connect my various components. The D-LINK 2205 satisfied on all counts.
My music, photo and video library files all reside on a NAS server in another location in my home. Internet access is via a hybrid (wired & wireless) router also located in another part of my home. Wireless hi-def feed performance was less than exemplary so I decided to opt for an economical high speed wired switch.
The D-LINK was easy to install as all it took was connecting the various media devices to the switch and the switch to the ethernet feed in my home theater location. The switch immediately configured itself and each component interface was clearly displayed via the front panel interface. The components all accommodate 1000bps streaming so speed of hi-def transmission was no longer an issue. The switch has been in operation for a couple of weeks now and I'm delighted to report its operation has been flawless.
It's small physical size allows for easy placement and the led front panel display is useful for monitoring connection and interface speed provided one is not more than 10 feet away. I was able to take advantage of a sale and rebate on the unit so my cost was only $19.99 but even at twice the price I'd highly recommend this device.
Customer Review: Good Aesthetic, Great Performance Summary: 5 Stars
This is actually the second D-Link Gigabit "Green" switch I've purchased, the first being in the same family, but the 8-port model. As expected, this one works just as well as its big brother, with spectacular transfer rates, a very nice aesthetic (especially when compared to some of the boxier, more squared-off competitor solutions), and a small footprint.
The switch sits on top of my modest mid-tower, and provides Gigabit connectivity for the machines at my desk (or for anyone visiting). Assuming you're bringing in one port from another switch or your router, the five ports means you'll have four usable, which should be plenty for most home setups. (I have the 8-port model sitting in my closet, where the router/modem/home server are, and it connected to the 5-port next to my desktop via one long CAT-5 cable.) The indicator LEDs on the front are also quite straightforward and easy to read, and let you know whether a given port is operating in 100baseT or 1000baseT mode.
Also, the switch supports Jumbo Frames, and I can confirm the feature works! All this plus the purported small energy footprint (I only say "purported" because I've done no thorough testing to confirm this) make this switch a great buy. Five stars, and highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great Product, easy to install. Summary: 5 Stars
I just got my new switch today. As with all switches, its extremely easy to setup. Any of the 5 ports can act as a Wan port so you do not need to be concerned with which port to plug the internet/router wire.
I like the dual lighting system to identify which ports are working at 1000 mbps and which ones are working at 100 mbps.
There is no noise and the switch is not hot to the touch like older previous gigabit switches were.
Transfer rates seem to be double what I got on FastEthernet. Of course, I am just copying and pasting with Windows Explorer which has a lot of wasteful overhead. Still, I am pleased that I am getting better performance.
I did a lot of research before buying this switch. The DLink 2205 doesn't seem to have a history of networking gear dying about the time the warranty is up like netgear and even linksys now, so I hope this one lasts past the warranty period. As networking gear has gotten cheaper and cheaper, so has the life expectancy of the gear.
I recommend this unit based on the price and the performance so far.
