Customer Review: Wish I had bought this product earlier

Being a technological Luddite, I only bought an iPod a year ago. At the recommendation of the folks at Best Buy, I purchased a headphone jack/RCA input jacks cable to connect the new iPod to my Bose audiowave system, which was a complete disaster because the sound was muddy and distorted. Not realizing that the poor sound quality was the result of the internal iPod amplifier and equalizer, I spent a couple hundred dollars replacing my existing system with a Bose docking stereo made especially for iPods.
Turns out that I could have spent $16 instead (including shipping) to get a cable that connects the iPod docking plug into my existing stereo, which bypasses the iPod's internal amplifier and equalizer. (The sound quality is actually better using the cable because the older stereo system has better acoustics than the stereo with a built-in iPod dock.)
The only downsides are that the cable does not work with the iPod Touch or iPhone. (Check the Cables to Go website for compatability with your iPod model.) Also, the cable does not recharge your iPod, and there is no remote control to skip forward, adjust volume, etc. Finally, the music will not have the same fidelity as a CD, but this is a function of listening to music in compressed MP3 format, rather than any shortcoming in the product. Still, given the low price of a cable and quality that is comparable to (or higher than) a dedicated iPod docking stereo, I sure wish I had known about this cheap alternative a year ago.
