Product Review Update 10/2/10: Just went though a major storm with plenty of lightening causing surges and voltage dips. The CyberPower CP550SLG came through like a champ. I actually watched it switch on and off between backup power and line voltage a number of times with no apparent glitching and absolutely NO damage to my computer and other connected units. The battery may not hold a charge for very long, but it does the trick and the surge protection is more than adequate. I upped my rating now to the full 5 stars after getting to see this in action.
I got the CyberPower CP550SLG for my home computer equipment. First thing I noticed was it came packed very well and everything came out of the box easily and looking new and right off the assembly line. It was packed with a phone cable, USB cable , system software for auto shutdown of your computer and a manual describing it's usage and warranty info. The unit itself has Three outlets with and four outlets without battery backup. Spacing is such that you can easily accommodate wall warts for either type of outlet. My first impression of the unit itself was one of solid build, good gauge power cable and overall impression of quality. I currently have my computer and all peripherals connected to this thing. I have the computer connected to the backup outlet with all other items in the standard outlets.. The included software and USB cable can be used to safely power your computer down in case of power failure without losing data or damaging your system. I have yet to test that function but my impression is that it will work when needed. (hopefully) As to their guarantee of insuring all your equipment up to 100 K for damages due to surges and lightening? Well, hopefully that will never happen but if it did I would hold them to it and see if I actually got paid anything. I am not willing to zap my gear in the meantime to see if they will make good on that promise. The manufacturer touts this as being very energy efficient. That is something I will confirm only after getting my next power bill. Hopefully during our next storm, if we get a surge or brownout the thing will kick in and do it's job. So far so good. Of note, the battery is NOT user replaceable so the lifespan of this product may only be a few years. STILL, it is competitively priced for what it is and if you worry about spikes , surges or losing data due to power failures, then this unit could be just what you need. Personally, I like it so far and am confident it will work when called upon to do so. (or I will ask for my fair share of that 100K)
