Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby TFTV1022 10.2-Inch Widescreen TFT LCD Digital TV/Monitor (Black)Customer Review: Price worth it139 miles away Summary: 5 Stars
I have found this good for what I had planned it for.
I wanted a 'portable'DTV for my car along with a VGA and composite inputs and that
would run off of 12 volts supplied by the cigarette lighter if I needed. This little
TV does exactly that.
I have had this for the six months and have had it a lot of places during my travels
and it hasn't failed to pick up those 'weak' signal stations. It does pick up a LOT
of stations even with a coat hanger cut to 19" and stuck into a cb antenna magnet
mount on the car. Not the best type of antenna, but I have been able to tune in DTV
stations from 60+ miles away with this setup. Not the best signal for those distant
stations but enough that this TV will detect them while scanning and allow me to
hook up a better antenna if I want to. This past weekend was able to pick up plenty
of stations outside my TV market area (Detroit) with an outside antenna at 30 feet.
Was able to scan for stations in Cleveland (117 air miles away), Bowling Green, OH
( 65 miles away), Flint ( 43 miles away ), and South Bend, IN ( 139 miles away ).
This is the only gripe I have with the TV is that I can't scan in one direction and
then point the antenna in another and rescan without loosing what I already scanned.
The screen is a little smaller than I expected for use for a VGA monitor, but it
works for what I use it for.
I would recommend this DTV for anyone who wants a portable setup that would run off
of 12volts in the car and needs to view weather radar or keep up with local events
while mobile.
As a reminder, you will not be able to use the 'digital' portion while in motion as
the timing of the signal causes the picture to pixelate while in motion and it won't
lock onto the signal.
Customer Review: Neat tiny monitor for a Mac Mini last xmas vacation Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for the exclusive purpose of dismantling it from its stand and making a little monitor I could use with a Mac Mini that I brought with me on vacation last year. I was pleasantly surprised to realize that not just the base is plastic space filler, but the majority of the surrounding as well. Perhaps being so much larger than the actual screen helps the speakers, which need space behind them to sound good, but I didn't use the audio feature of this TV at all, really. Seemed good, but I didn't listen enough to rate it.
Instead of as a TV, I used its SVGA plug - a truly awesome feature, Digital TVs shouldn't ever be sold without computer-compatible inputs. To give the electronics some structure other than the screen itself, I joined the two metal endplates of the screen's edge support with a sheet of polycarbonate from Home Depot that I had drilled holes in all the appropriate places, so I could reposition the button circuit board on the back of the unit, with the buttons slightly recessed.
I used SwitchResX to set up the 800x480 resolution; can't remember the exact settings but it was pretty easy to make the custom resolution, way way easier than it ever was in Linux.
End result: a full fledged computer that fit into a box smaller than any laptop does, with power supplies monitor, and even speakers for the beeps. Smaller box than even those new "minis" from Dell or HP can fit into! (laptop minis flat, but broad..) I think it was a Sony picture frame box, actually.
Still works and looks good too, even thru all that abuse. So if you are gonna use it regularly with a computer, and leave it in the case, I'm sure it'd last a long time.
Customer Review: Great value - perfect office/bedroom/kitchen telly Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
- Great connectivity: coax, RCA composite, headphone jack, VGA
- Very useful remote
- Option to switch aspect ratios (4:3 like a traditional TV, 16:9 for widescreen)
- Price
- Huge space saving over a tube TV of comparable size - great for kitchen, office or bedroom
Cons:
- Fiddly to adjust the picture initially, but fine once you have
- Not HDTV or plasma (erm.... but not meant to be)
I use this TV on my desk in my home office, and it is perfect for my needs. It is hooked up to a satellite box via the coax connector and is fully functional. It also works just fine with a DVD via the RCA composite connectors. I have not tried the VGA connector with a PC, so I cannot comment on that.
As the other reviewers mentioned, the picture takes a bit of adjusting to get brightness, contrast, etc. to where you want them, but once you have it, the colors are fairly vivid and the picture quality is the equivalent of a portable tube TV, which is plenty good enough for me!
The speakers are not bad (similar to the speakers on a flat panel computer monitor - not much bass, but not 1970s-radio-tinny). If I am watching a movie, I plug my PC speakers (which have a woofer) into the headphone jack and Bob's your uncle, genuine mini home theater! Even my wife (a self-avowed audio snob) was impressed.
A little gem, IMHO.
Customer Review: Love the versatility Summary: 5 Stars
This is a small TV. It can be wall-mounted or it can rest on the included stand. The tv can also be used as a computer monitor.
I have no complaints about picture quality. The colors are natural and sharp.
Reception is lousy without an external antenna. In fact, I couldn't get a single channel in my area. I bought a Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception for it and hooked it up. I immediately got 50 more channels. If you buy this to use as a TV, you must definitely buy an antenna to go with it.
Sound quality is acceptable, no static, but it's not crystal clear, either. Basically, it sounds like it's coming from a small box, which it is. Increasing the sound makes it sound like a loud sound from a small box.
I like my Coby TV. It sits above my treadmill and I watch it while working out. I've also used it when I needed an extra monitor from my computer. It performed nicely as a monitor. The images are clear and I didn't have any problems. Love the versatility.
Customer Review: Perfect For The Price Tag! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this television last week and it arrived shortly thereafter. My husband and I purchased it to put in front of my treadmill. After reading the reviews, we decided on this brand and size. Many people complained about the "tinny" quality of the sound. Out of the box it DID sound "tinny" but as soon as my husband went into the "sound options" and moved around the bass and treble, it sounded PERFECT. People also complained that they couldn't get all of the channels on this TV - well when we hooked it up we couldn't either - UNTIL my husband switched the setting for how the cable comes into the TV (I think it was the CABTV setting?) - now we get all the same channels that we get on all of our other TVs. The picture quality is amazing for such a small and inexpensive TV and we love the sleek design. As long as you have someone who knows that they are doing with the settings you will love this TV also!
